UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM s. wEBsrEE, on NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
HARNESS-PAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 374,024, dated November 29, 1887.
Application filed September 3, 1887. Serial No. 248.6! 9.
T0 aZZ whom. it may concern:
Be it known thatl, WILLIAM S. WEBsTEE, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Harness-Pad, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention consists in forming the backpad without a jockey, the skirt on each side being made. continuous from the saddle to the lower end and an opening being formed therein for the back-band to pass under the skirt at a point somewhat below the terret.
The invention also consists in providing the said opening for the back-band in each skirt with a facing to imitate ajockey and to prevent wear.
The invention finally consists of the construction ofthe pad,all as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying.
in which similar letters of reference, indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my new and improved harness back-pad. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional elevation of the same, takeu on the line mocofFig. 1; andFig. 3isadetailed sectional view ofthe skirt and back-band.
The pad is surmounted by the saddle A, which rests directly'upon the upper adjacent ends of the skirts B,instead of upon a separate piece called a jockey. The skirts B are each made in one piece from the saddle A to the tips of the pad,and a little below each terret O is formed in each skirt an opening, D, for the (No model.)
about theback-band and gives the appearance,
of and takes the place of ajockey. The skirts B have the pads G secured directly to them, as shown in Fig. 2, and are provided with a welt, g, at each edge,'and the pads are provided at each edge with a welt, h, as shown in Fig. 2. The welts gare composed ofa leather tube, and suitable filling, and the welts h are composed of a tube, h, and suitable filling. The tubes and h are stitched to each edge of the pad cloth or leatherj by a single seam, t. This done, the welt-covering h is stitched to each edge of the skirt by a seam, i, so that by the two scams 4; at each edge of the skirt the two welts and the pad cloth or leather are all secured to the skirt ready to be stuffed.
Having thus fullydescribed my-invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a harness saddle, the skirt 13, formed with an opening, D, faced'with a clip, F, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The pad-cloth j, having the inside and outside welt-casing, g h, stitched to its edges by scams 2', and the outside welt-casing stitched to the skirt B, substantially as described.
WILLIAM S. VVEBSIER.
