U ITED f STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN K. HOTZE, OF ST. LOUIS,,MISSOURI.
-BRIDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,008, dated February 1, 1887.
Application filed October 14, 1886. Serial No. 216,298. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JoHN K. Horzn, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Blind-Bridles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which Figurel is a side view of one of the cheekpieces of leather by which the blinder is connected to the side strap. Fig. 2 is'a perspective view of a side strap without a box-loop. Fig. 3 is a side view of a piece of leather from which the box-Loop ismade. Fig. 4 is a side View of the outer layer of the cheelcpiece to ,which the blinder is attached. Fig. 5 is a side view of the blinder. Fig. 6 is a side view of a modification in which the box-loop piece and one of the cheek-pieces are cut in one piece. Fig. 7 is aside view of one side of the bridle in process of construction. Fig. 8 is a side view of one side of thebridle completed. Fig. 9 is a transverse section at 9 9, Fig. 7 Fig. 10 is a transverse section at 10 10, Fig. 8. Figs. 11 and 12 are side views showing modifications. Fig. 13 shows the bridle upon a horse. p
My improvements consist in a means for the construction of the bridle with box-loops upon the sides in the manner described to enable the use of machine-work, or to make the process much easier when doneby hand construction, and producing a superior article.
In all the better classes of bridles the side straps, A, have box-loops B. These have heretofore been sewed in place by hand-work by a tedious and expensive process, because no access of the hand can be had tothe inner side in making the last row of stitches, and for the same reason this last row could not'be sewed by a machine.
In carrying out myimprovement one edge, a, the inner cheek-piece, G, and'one edge, b, of the box-loop piece B are stitched in the side strap, A, by rows of stitches a a. 1 Ihen the box-loop piece B is folded over and its edge 12 laid upon the cheek-piece 0.. Now the outer cheek-piece, O, is laid in position, with its edge 0 lapping over the edge I) of the boxloop piece. After thisis done the row D of stitches is made, connecting the two cheekpieces together close to the side strap, and securing the edge I) of the box-loop piece between the cheek-pieces O and G.
As a modification, the cheek-piece C may be cut in one piece with the .boX-loop'piece B. In this case the edge of the piece 0 and the edge of piece B C are laid between the two parts of the side strap, A, and the two seams a a. made. Then the piece B G is folded over, and the outer edges, 0 of these pieces made to match and the row D of stitches made, leaving the box-loop, as before described. In point of fact the seam Dis generally a hidden seam upon the outside, the leather being scored and the stitches hidden by closing the "lips of the scoreover the stitches, according to well-known practice.
No novelty is claimed in the blinder E.
I claim as my invention 1. A box-loop having one of its longitudinal edges turned inward under the loop-body and the other turned outward therefrom, substantially as set forth.
2-. In a bridle, the combination, with a boxloop having one of its longitudinal edges turned inward under the loop-body and the other turned outward therefrom, of two cheekpieces and a line of stitching for securing the outturnededge between the cheek-pieces, an interposed strip between the i nturned edge and the loop-body, and a line of stitching for securing the strip and inturned edge together, substantially as set forth. I
3.111 combination with strap A, a cheekpiece, 0, a box-loop, B, having an inturned longitudinal edge, stitching which secures the inturned edge of loop B and cheelz-piece G to strap A, another cheek-piece, C, an outturned longitudinal edge on box-loop B,and a-line of stitching, by which the outturned edge is secured between the cheelopieces G and O, substantially as set forth.
