MICHAEL F. CAVANAGH, OF ST. LOUIS, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN P. SNYDER, OF JEFFERSON CITY, MISSOURI.
HORSE-COLLAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 323,274, dated July 28, 1885.
Application led January 24, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL F. CAVA- NAGH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Horse-Collars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and complete description of the saine, reference being had to the annexed drawings, and letters of reference marked thereon, as a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in horse-collars; and it consists in forming a flange on the outside of the neck-roll of the collar by cutting a slit in the outside of the neck-roll, turning the edges of the slit out and inserting a welt between them, and then laying a binding on the front of the flange and sewing the two edges ofthe roll, the welt, and the binding al1 together with a seam the whole length of the slit, then turning the binding over the welt and sewing it on with a second seam, thus making a complete flange from the covering ofthe neck-roll and covering it with a binding.
Figure l in the drawings is a front elevation of my collar, showing the flange nished at b, and the iiange and the binder at c, and the depression for the windpipe ofthe horse-at d. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my collar, showing the binder on the flange cut away so as to show the upper and lower end of the liangc without the binder.
In constructing my collar I cut the neckroll so that it will have a deep depression at d on the inside of the collar, at the lower end, directly opposite the windpipe of the horse when the collar is on, when the neck-roll is stuffed, and also welldefi ned shoulders at either side of this depression to press upon the iieshy portion of the neck of the horse, and thus assist in preventing the collar from pressing on the windpipe of the horse when the collar pulls up. I also, after the neckroll is cut and formed, make a slit on the outside of the neck-roll of suflicient length, and insert a welt of leather, and then take another piece of leather nt for a binder of the welt and lay it reversed on the front side of the neckroll and sew it onto the flange, the seam going through the two sides of the slit and the welt at the same time. This welt is shown at Fig. 2, and designated by V.
e is the binder, and f f are the sides of the slit or the lips of the flange made by the slit of this ange, but such flanges were made v with a super piece for the back lip of the iiange, which is much more difficult and eX- pensive to make than the present one, and also impracti cable, for the super piece would crack and give way at the place where it was joined onto the collar.
I know that the patent of George W. Pool, being No. 297,150, dated April 22, 1884, has aV rim secured to the neck-roll by means of two seams, whereby the rim can be detached without injury to the collar, which I do not claim, as my device is .wholly unlike this in that I do not have a stuffed rim at all, as in this device, neither is it secured to the neckroll by two seams, so it can be detached, but the rim is formed from the lips ff of the slit in the neck-roll, and the binder eis placed over it to make a finish.
Iam also aware that flanges on the neckroll of collars are old. Flanges with one side of the lip formed from a part of the neck-roll of a collar and thc other side made from a sub-piece with a welt in between them are old, as seen in patent to Peter J. Peters, No. 302,934, dated August 5, 1884, and I do not claim that combination as mine differs from that in that it has no sub-piece, but has simply a slit in the neck-roll, and the lipsff formed from the slit turned out and pinched up and sewed together, and the whole bound with a leather binder. Thus I avoid the trouble of insert-ing thesub-piece. It is not necessary to the utility of my invention to insert the welt between the lipsffin my collar, hence I hereby dispense with it; but the .main feature of my invention consists in slitting the neck-roll and turning out the lipsff of the slit and sewing them together, thus making a hamcwelt.
Now, what I claim as new is- In a horse-collar, the neck-roll having a slit in its outside covering in front and lengthwise of the neck-roll, forming lipsff, which are stitched together and covered by the binder c, all combined substantially as described.
MICHAEL F. CAVANAGH.
