Description

Nov 151927.
I J. F. SCHOELLKOPF HORSE COLLAR Original Filed April 5. 1924 Patented Nov. 1, 1927.
JACOB men .SCHOELLKOZPF, or names, TEXAS.
'HORSE COLLAR.
Refile for abandoned applination Serial .No. 704,380, filed April 5., 1924. This application filed December 11, 1925. Serial .No..- 72,578." V
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in horse .col-la'rs and particularly to rim and body joints.
T he object of the invention is to provide a joint between the rim and body of a horse collar, whereby these parts may be united In .a serviceable and economical manner.
A particular object is to unite the parts in a more substantial. way by the formation of a stitched and laced joint of novel construction.
An important object is to provide a joint having ample hame room, but conserving the material utilized.
A further object is to provide a joint wherein the parts are stitched together to hold them in the desired relation and then whipped or overlaced with a leather thong, whereby strength and durability are added.
A construction designed to carry outthe invention will be hereinafter described together with other features of the invention.
The invention will be more readily understood from a reading of the following specification and by reference to the accompanyingdrawings, in which an example of the invention is shown, and wherein:
Fig. 1 is a view of a horse collar constructed in accordance with my invention, a portion being shown in cross-section and a portion in perspective,
Fig. 2 is a similar view of a modified form of the invention;
Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are isometrical views of modifications of the invent-ion, and
Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view of an-' other form of joint. p
In the drawings the numeral 10 designates the upper body portion and 11 the lower body portion of a horse collar, which body is filled with packing -(not shown) in the usual manner. To the body is joined a rim cover or member 12, which is also packed in the usual manner.
In Fig. 1 a welt strip 13 has its upper portion inserted between the lower edges of the rim cover and is united thereto by a line of stitches 14, passing through the three plies of material and forming a seam. The lower portion of the welt is received between the upper edges of the body covers 10 and 11 and united thereto by a line of stitches 15, passing through the three plies of material and forming a seam.
lacing.
The edges of the rim covers are substantially flush with each other and abut the substantially flush edges of the body covers. The stitches unite the parts and the welt connects the rim-and body. By use of the weltthe stitches maybe placed-close to the edges of the covers. To give strength and durability and prevent the rim and body being separated athong 16 of leather or other suitable material is laced alternately through the-edge portions of the rim cover and the body cover. It is essential that the lacing penetrates the covers outside of the stitches, whereby the seams are within the This enables the making of a narrower hame channel between the rim and body, than would be possible if the stitches were outside of the lacing. It also makes a more compact joint and allows the covers tospread from the seams, thus adding this material to the bodies and increasing theirsize.
In Fig. 2the edges of the rim cover 12 are substantially flush, while instead of the welt 13, the edge portion 17 of the cover 10 is inserted between the edges of the rim cover to form a welt. The stitches 14 in this form pass through the portion 17, while the stitches 15 pass through the covers 10 and 11, near the edge of the latter. The edge of the cover 11 abuts one edge of the rim cover. The thong 16 passes alternately through the rim covers and portion 17 and the body covers outside of the seams. In Fig. 3 the edge portion 18 of the body. cover 11 is inserted. between the edges of the rim cover, otherwise the joint is the same as in Fig. 2.
In Fig. 4 the rim cover 12 has one edge portion 19 inserted between the substantially flush edges'of the body covers, the stitches 14 passing through the rim covers, while the stitches 15 pass through the body covers and the portion 19. The thong 16 is alternately laced through the rim covers and the body covers and portion 19. In Fig. 5 the relation is reversed, the other edge portion 20 being extended down between the body covers.
In Fig. 8 I have a'further exemplification in that no welt member is employed, but an extra line of stitches is used to lend strength and durability. In this form the edges of the cover members are offset, sothat the edge portion 11' of the cover 11 overlaps the edge portion 120i the rim cover, the other edges abutting. The overlapping portions 11 and 12' are united by a central line of stitches 21, While the stitches 14 and 15 on each side thereof unite the edge portions of the covers as in the other forms. The thong 16 is passed alternately through the rim covers and the body covers With the three lines of stitches, all Within the lacing.
It is Within the scope of the invention to vary the exact manner of lacing the thong 16, the essential feature being that the thong penetrate the rim and body members outside of the stitches and that it also connect said members and at least overlap the stitches and joint on one side of the collar.' It is also possible to omit one row or line of stitches and to depend upon the thong lacing to hold the edges of the unstitched member in place.
What I claim, is: I
1. in a horse collar, a rim cover having its edges presented to the edges of body covers, one edge of'the rim cover abutting the edge of one of the body covers, a line of stitches uniting the rim covers contiguous to their ends, a second line of stitches unit ing the body covers contiguous to their ends, and a lacing passing alternately through the rim cover and the body covers outside of and crossing the lines of stitches at each side of the joint, whereby the oint between the rim and body covers and the stitches are con fined Within the lacing.
2. In a horse collar, a rim member, a body member having one edge abutting one edge of the rim member, a Welt element inserted between the edges of one of said members, two separate lines of stitches contiguous to the edges-of said members, one of said line of stitches uniting the Welt element-"With one ot the members and the other line of stitches uniting the edge portions of the other member and the'welt, and a thong laced alternately through the members and the Welt element outside of and entirely around the joint and its lines of stitches.
In testimony WhereofI aflix my signature.
