To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, AMOS N. STAIR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cairo, in the county of Alexander and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in, Horse-Collars, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to the class of horse collars and more specifically to that class of horse collars wherein means are provided for securing the rim of the body portion thereof.

An object of my invention is to provide means whereby the rim of the collar may be secured to the body portion thereof, the said means being simple in construction strong, durable and eflicient in use and one which can be manufactured at a minimum cost. Heretofore great difliculty has been encountered in holding the rim of the collar secure to the body portion. The hames engage the body portion of the collar at a point at which the rim is attached and con sidcrable wear is applied thereto as is obvious. It is my object to overcome the chiliculty above mentioned and to provide a horse collar wherein the rim and body portion are securely fastened together and will not break under the strain of the hames which engage the traces thereto.

With the above and other objects in view my invention results in such details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and specifically set forth in the appended claims.

In describing my invention in detail reference will be made to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding views throughout the several parts and in which:

Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional view of my invention showing the inner side of the collar. Fig. '2 is a side elevation of invention showing parts broken away. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view showing the inner side of a collar having a modified form of fastening means. Fig. 4: is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the front elevation of the fastening means shown in Fig. 3.

In the accompanying drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention the numeral 1 designates a section of material bent into substantially circular form as shown and adapted to form a rim of the collar, it being stuffed with an ordi- Specification of Letters Patent.

nary filling 2. The ends of the section 1 are secured together as shown at 3 whereby the filling is securely held in place and the finished rim is formed.

The body portion of the collar comprises the members a and 5 which are constructed preferably of leather and secured together at their inner and outer ends by such means as shown at (3 and 7 respectively. The body portlon is also stuffed with filling 8 whereby the soft pad is formed which is adapted to engage the shoulders of the horse when in use.

Vhile I have stated above that the rim and body portion are constructed of leather I desire it to be understood that other ma terial may be employed without deviating from the spirit of my invention. Means have been provided whereby the inner ends of the rim and body portion can be securely held together, this means comprising strips 9 and 10 which are substantially circular in form and engage the outer and inner sides of the body portion and rim. These strips are securely held in place by the lashing 11. The lashing shown very clearly in Fig. 2 extends through the lashing openings in the strip 9 and portion and along said strip and through said strip and one of said portions adjacent the marginal edges thereof and across the meeting edges and throughthe opposite sides of the strip and the other of the portions. The lashing is then passed back along the side of the strip in a direction reverse to the initial direction of the lashing and through the same side of the strip and the same portions and then crosses itself at the meeting edges and extends to and through the opposite portions and the other side of the strip, successively about the portions to provide an eflicient joint and prevent a hinge-like movement of the pertions. It is apparent that by the addition of the strips 9 and 10 and the lashings, that the rim and body portion can be securely held together and their displacement from each other is prevented.

For the purpose of reinforcing the outer side of member 5 a section of material 12 is provided and secured in place as shown. By the addition of this extra section the outer surface of the collar will be prevented from wearing out when under the strain of the hames.

While the above mentioned means for securing the rim and body portion together has proven very eflicient in actual practice,

I have illustrated in Figs. tand 5 the modified form which consists of a peculiar way understood that either form of my inventioncan be used when occasion requires.

Havingthus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a horse collar, a pair of marginal body and rim portions with the portion of each pair in superimposed relation and the edges of the portions in abutting relation, a reinforcing strip superimposed over and extending along the abutting edges of said pairs and overlapping said edge laterally of the line of their abutting juncture and being secured-to the opposite pair of margins, said margins and said strip having lines of lashing openings, and a lashing laced through one pair of margins and to said strip and extending along said strip and being laced back through said strip and the same margins and then across the line of abutting juncture to and through the other pair of margins and said strip and then extended along the same side of said strip in a direction reverse to the initial direction of the lace and through the same margins and strip and then extended across the line of juncture and through the other of said margins and said strip successively about the portions to provide an eiiicient'joint and prevent a hinge movement of the portions.

2. A horse collar comprising a body portion, a reinforcing section for said portion, a rim portion constructed separately from the body portion, a reinforcing strip, each portion having longitudinal edges, the edges of both portions arranged to meet, the meeting edges being in alinement, said strip arranged over said meeting edges, a second reinforcing strip, said second strip arranged over the said meeting edges on the opposite side of the portion to that on which the first strip is secured, fastening means passing through said portions, one of said strips and said sections, and a lashing, said lashing alternately passing through said portions and one of said strips on opposite sides of the meeting edges of the portions, said lashing also arranged to have portions extending across and contacting with the said meeting edges to provide an eiiective joint.

8. A horse collar comprising a body portion, a rim portion constructed separately from the body portion, each portion having longitudinal edges, the edges of both portions arranged to meet, the meeting edges being in aline1nent,a reinforcing strip arranged over said meeting edges, stitches passing through said portions and said strip, and a lashing, said lashing passing through one side of said strip and through said body portion adjacent the meeting edges thereof, said lashing extending diagonally across and contacting with said meeting edges and through the opposite side of said strip and said rim portion adjacent to the meeting edges thereof, said lashing then extending in a direction reverse to the initial direction of lace and being also passed through said strip and said rim portion adjacent the meeting edges thereof and crosses itself at the meeting edges and passes through said strip and said body portion adjacent the meeting edges thereof to provide an effective oint and prevent a hinge movement of the portion.
