PATENT OFFICE.
C. WURST, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
s'roo'KlNG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 615,271, dated December 6, 1898. Application iiled January 22, 1898. Serial No. 667,639. (No model.)
T all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, NICHOLAS HAYDEN and CHARLES F. C. WUEsT, citizens of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of `Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Stocking, of which the following is a specification.
This invention provides simple and easilyoperated means for connecting the legging of a stocking to the foot portion and which will admit of the parts being readily separated when required.
A further purpose of the invention is to secure the parts of the stocking by positive and frictional means, thereby preventing creeping of either part and at the same time securing a neat and serviceable joint.
For a full understanding of the merits and advantages of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings andthe following description.
The improvement is susceptible of various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and to a full disclosure of the invention an adaptation thereof is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a stocking embodying the essential features of this invention. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. l, having the parts separated and shown on a larger scale, the upper portion of the legging being broken away. Fig. 3 is a detail section.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The stocking comprises the legging l and foot portion 2 and is separable on a line corresponding approximately with the ankle or a short distance above the same. The foot portion has loops Sat its sides, which are designed to pass through slots or openings 4 in the sides ofthe legging at its lower end. Similar loops 5 are located at the sides ofthe leg` ging at its lower end and near the rear and are designed to retain an elastic strap or tape 6 in place. This elastic strap or tape 6 may be secured to the lower end of the legging in any desired manner, but the loops 5 admit of it being easily and quickly removed when required. l
When the stocking is worn, the upper end of the foot portion passes within the lower end of the legging and the loops 3 are passed through the slots 4, and the end portions of the elastic strap 6 are slipped through the loops 3, thereby securing the contiguous ends of the separable portions. The end portions of the elastic strap or tape, after being passed through the loops 3, are detachably connected by a hook and eye or any suitable clasp or fastening which will admit of the elastic Vhaving its ends quickly and easily separated when required. The end portions of the separable parts are hemmed, thereby providing end ribs, and the overlapping portions pass by each other a sufficient distance to admit of the elastic strap or tape coming between the reinforced or thickened ends of the legging and foot, and after the part 6 is secured about the limb the overlapping portions of the stocking will be held against displacement by reason of the binding action caused by the pressure of the 1elastic 6 and by the reinforcing ends of the said parts coming in Contact with the edge portions of the elastic 6, as will be readily understood.
The means set forth provide for the foot portion of the stocking being readily detached from the legging for any purpose desired, and when the stocking is worn the elastic insures a neat joint and one which will prevent the creeping of the overlapping portions past one another so as to expose the part covered thereby.
From the foregoing it will be understood that the foot portion of the stocking may be readily detached and replaced by another when badly worn or otherwise unfitted for further service at less expense than replacing the entire stocking, and, moreover, foot-pieces of different kinds may be applied to the leg portion, and the parts comprising the stockingmay be of knitted goods, silk, felt, leather, or any desired material, and the separable parts may be secured by buckle, hook and IOO Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
l. A stocking comprising a legging and a foot portion having their meeting end portions overlapped, loops applied to one of the parts and passing through corresponding slots or openings in the other part, and a strap or tape encircling and confining the overlapping portions of the stocking and passing through the said loops to prevent their withdrawal through the said slots or openings, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a stocking, the combination of a foot portion having loops projecting outwardly from its sides, a legging having its lower end portion overlapping the upper end portion of the foot part and formed with openings or slots for the passage therethrough of the loops of the foot portion, and an elastic strap or tape having slidable connection with the lower end portion of the legging and adapted to pass through the side loops of the foot portion and prevent their withdrawal through the slots of the legging, said strap encircling and confining the overlapping portions of the stocking and provided with means for adj ustably connectin g their ends, substantially as described. In testimon57 that We claiin the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses. v
