Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,257 ,datcd July 16, 18?
SPECIFICATION.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN G. STURGES, of the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in the Ornamentation of Harness-Buckles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The object of my invention is to produce a harness-buckle with an ornamentation upon the loop A raised out of the metal, thus Odering the advantage of cheapening and expediting the process of such ornamentation, as well as enhancing the beauty of such ornaments, and the facilities for cleaning the same.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe the process of producing said ornamen tation.
I make these harness-buckles in the ordinary manner with a loop,'so constructed that the under side may be operated upon by a pair of dies, said loop being cast fiat and made of malleable iron, in the usual manner; and When thus made I turn the buckle upside down, and with a requisite die press the ornament upon and into the lower side of the loop, thus producing a raised ornament upon the upper side of the loop A.
It will readily be seen that this process of pressing and ornamenting the loop of a buckle is a very quick and consequently cheap one; and it will also be seen that the figure of the ornament could quickly and cheaply be varied.
Having thus described my invention, and the mode and manner of producing the same, What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A malleable-iron harness-buckle, having an ornamentation raised in relief by a die compressing the part from the under side to the shaping-die on the upper side of the buckle, substantially as herein specified;
