IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 333,160, dated November 19, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SPENCER B. LANE, of Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Sleeve-Buttons, of which the following is a specification:
The invention consists in forming the perforated head of a button with lips, and the shank with a bifurcation, by which they may be connected as hereinafter fully described.
Figure 1 is a section of head, shank, and base before the studs of the shank are turned over and clinched; Fig. 2 is a section and top view of head; Fig. 3 is a section and top view of button with head applied; and Fig. 4 is a section and top view of the parts, all united.
The upper end of the shank d is forked, as shown, to enter with its prongs two apertures in the headB of the button or stud. These apertures e e are formed in said head B by punching, but so that no material is removed; consequently, the material between the apertures is turned up to form two lips, f f, as shown. After the prongs of the shank at are passed through the holes 0 of the head B, said prongs are bent apart and clinched upon the button, the pressure upon them also bending the lips f over the prongs. The lips f serve thus to hold the prongs down upon the head B and steady the entire connection of parts.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the perforated head B, having the lips f, with the forked shank d, substantially as herein shown and described.
SPENCER B. LANE.
