UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERSHEL M. NESTER, OF HENDRICKS, WEST VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO DILWORTH & POLING, OF SAME PLACE.
BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 485,111, dated October 25,1892.
Application filed May4,1892. Serial No. 431.784. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HERSHEL M. NEsrER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hendricks,in the county of Tucker and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
The invention relates to improvements in I5 buttons of that class or character which are secured to articles of clothing without the aid of sewing.
The object of the invention is to provide a button of simple and economical construction which can be secured to articles of clothing,
either by the manufacturer or the wearer, in
a rapid and efficient manner.
The invention consists in the novel construction hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view of a button constructed according to my invention, showing the same attached to a piece of fabric. Fig.2 is a similar View showing the button detached from 0 the fabric and the parts comprising the same separated from each other. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the same. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 show a modified form of securing-disk.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates the head or disk, 2 the shank, and 3 an intermediate annularflange. These parts may be formed integral or of a single piece of metal, or the head may be formed of any suitable material and the shank made of metal and united thereto. The shank 2 consists of a thin metal tube tapering nearly to a point, so as to readily pierce the waistband of a pair of pants or other article.
The numeral 4 denotes a securing-disk of any suitable material having an annular recess 5 in its center and overlapping flange 6,
in which recess is located a cone or wedge 7, with an intervening space 8 between the base of the cone and the inner side of the flange.
In Figs. 4:, 5, and 6 I have shown a some-what- 5o modified form of securing-disk. In this instance two plates are struck up from a sheet of metal connected together by a strip 9, one of said plates being formed with the cone, while the other is formed witha central aperture and a tongue 10. These plates are folded over upon each other and the tongue 10 folded over the edge of the opposite disk, forming in effect a single disk similar to that first above described.
The operation will be readily understood. To attach the button to an article, the shank is passed through the material comprising the same until the flange 3 comes in contact therewith. The securing-disk is then applied with the cone resting in the end of the tube. By now pressing the parts together the end of the tube will be upset or spread out and engaging in the space between the cone and the flange of the disk will be firmly held therein and the parts secured together.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A button comprising a head with a tubular tapering shank and a securing-disk having a central recess, an overlapping flange, and a cone or wedge, substantially as described.
2. A securing-disk for buttons, consisting of two connected plates, one of which is formed with a cone, while the other is provided with A an aperture and a tongue, said plates being folded over upon each other and the tongue folded over the edge of the opposite plate, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HERSHEL M. NESTER.
Vitnesses:
W. N. THOMPSON, J. E. POLING.
