UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE,

BUTTON.
$PECIFIGATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 471,911, dated March 29, 1892.
Applicationfiled October 22, 1891- Serial No. 409,524. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, RICHARD SUTRo, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
This invent-ion relates to buttons for garments and other purposes; and it consists in certain novel features in the same and in the construction thereof, as hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which the figure is a central vertical sectional view of a complete button constructed according to my invention and attached to a garment or article.
The button is in this example made of four pieces or parts, which are preferably of metal. These are, first, the circular front plate A, which in the figure is shown face downward; second, the eyelet-ring B; third, the annular plate E, with which the lower end. of the eyelet-ring is interlocked; fourth, the rivet O. The rim of the front plate A is turned over and inward, as is shown at D, and comes over upon and confines the outer edge of the annular plate E, above mentioned. The inner end of the eyelet-ring is provided with a circular flange F, which comes under and supports the edge of the fabric to which the bution is to be attached while the button is in the process of being attached to the fabric. The rivet C is solid and is made of lead or other readily bendable or compressible soft metal, and is provided with a head G, which is expanded to fill the space between the front plate A and the annular plate E, and its body extends thence upward through the eyelet-ring B,- above which it is provided with a groove H, that receives the edge of the fabric at the hole where the rivet penetrates the fabric. The end of the solid soft-metal rivet is upset to form the flattened head 0, which constitutes the shoe of the button and between which and the flange F of the eyeletring B the garment or article P, to which the button isapplied, is gripped.
Although I prefer to make the rivet C of lead, it can also be made of zinc or of any soft metal or composition of metals which can be easily riveted under the action of a punch.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A button consisting of the front plate A, the annular plate E, engaged with the periphery of the front plate, the eyelet-ring B, interlocked with the annular plate, and the solid soft-metal rivet 0, formed with a solid head G, expanded into a head which fills the space between the front plate and the annular plate, said solid rivet extending through the eyeletring and formed integral with a flattened head 0, which constitutes the shoe of the button and between which and the. end of the eyelet-ring the article to which the button is applied is gripped, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
