PATENT Onnicn.
EDWIN JQKRAETZER, OF CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGN OR TO THE CONSOLIDATED FASTENER COMPANY, OF PORTLAND, MAINE.
GLOVE-FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 494,104, dated March 21, 1893.
Application filed October 10, 1891. Serial No.408,315. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN .T. KRAETZER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cambridge, in the county of Suffolk and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners for Gloves and Garments, of which the following is a full specification.
My invention consists of certain improvements in the button hole member of a two part spring fastener for gloves and garments, of the class wherein a part of the fastener is secured to each flap of the glove or garment.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows in section the complete button hole member; Fig. 2,'the two main portions of which the button hole member is composed, shown on opposite sides of the glove material Fig. 3 shows a form of spring button member adapted to engage with the button hole member. Fig. 4 shows in section the cover of the button hole member; Fig. 5, the anvil piece; Fig. 6, the retaining piece; Fig. 7, the stud receiving chamber or socket, and, Fig. 8, the stud retaining flanged lip which is clinched over the mouth of the socket.
A is the cover or cap of the button hole member. In this is placed the anvil piece B and the retaining piece C in the relative position shown in Fig. I, and the downwardly projecting flange of the cover is clinched in and around the sloping side of the retaining piece thus holding the parts A, B and C together, and forming what I term the button top.
D is the stud holding chamber or socket, having the flaring bell shape shown in Fig. 7, and provided with the upwardly projecting riveting eyelet d integral therewith. Over the flaring mouth of the socket D is clinched the flanged lip E which holds the stud when inserted in the socket in the manner presently to be seen.
The three parts, A, B and C, assembled together as just described are placed above the material to which the button hole member is to beclinched and the parts D and E below said material as shown in Fig. 2, and the two main portions are pressed together between suitably shaped dies, with the result that the upwardly projecting sharp riveting eyelet d coacts with the rounded anvil b of the piece B to shear a hole through the material. Additional pressure serves to turn outward the said rivet 01 against the anvil 1) between it and the retaining piece C with the result that the tracted neck of the stud when the stud is inserted in the socket. The flanged lip is preferably corrugated as at e to give greater strength and to present a neat appearance to the under side of the button hole member. Moreover, the portion of said lip around the central opening thereof is rounded over as at e so as to form a rolling collar to embrace the contracted neck of the stud rather than a sharp edge. Such a rolling collar conforms more readily to the curve of the rolled in neck of the stud and causes the button and button hole member when snapped together to hold more tightly by reason of the fact that it prevents play and looseness up and down.
I claim- 1. In a button hole member of afastener for gloves and garments the combination with a suitable fastener top provided with eyelet clinching and retaining devices of a flaring bell-shaped stud-receiving chamber D whose upper portion is drawn inward and extended upward into a clinching eyelet d integral with said chamber adapted to engage with said fastener top, and a flanged lip whose upper portion is clinched in around the outwardly flaring mouth of said chamber, the material around the central opening of said lip being bent upward and backward to form a rolling collar 6', substantially as and forthe purposes described.
2. In a button hole member of a fastener for gloves and garments the combination with a suitable fastener top provided with eyelet clinching and retaining devices, of a daring bell-shaped stud-receiving chamber D whose upper portion is drawn inward and extended upward into a clinching eyelet d integral with said chamber adapted to engage with said fastener top, and a flanged lip whose upper portion is clinched in around the outwardly flaring mouth of said chamber, the bottom of the lip being corrugated at e, substantially as and for the purposes described.
3. In a fastener for gloves and garments the combination with a fastener top consisting of a cover A, a central anvil piece B, and an eyelet retaining piece O, around the sloping sides of which the cover is clinched, in combination with a flaring bell --shaped stud receiving chamber 1) whose upper portion is drawn inward and extended upward into a clinching Witnesses: WM.
