Description
ASAHEL A. HTCHKISS. Snap-Hooks.`
No.12-73117, I Patented May 28,1872.

IMPROVEMENT IN SNAP-HOOKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,347, dated May 28, 1872.
Specification of Improvements in Snap- Hooks, invented by AsAHEL A. HoTcHKIss, ot' Sha-ron, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut.
This invention relates in part to that cla-ss ot' snap-hooks in which the spring-tongue is passed through the loop and bent over the back of the hook and secured by a collar. This part of the invention consists in horns formed on the collar, which secures the spring-ton gue in place, whereby said collar is clinched to the loop of the hook; also, in guards formed on it, whereby the spring-tongue is insured against lateral movement.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a front view of a snap-hook constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 isa side view of `the same, partially in section; and Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several gures.
A is the body of the hook,'which is made of a piece of wire bent to form a loop, a, and hook b, atthe tip ofjvhich its ends are united by In the inner side 5f this tip there is a recess, c,.1nade by swaging in the operation otl Welding the ends of the Wire together. B is the spring-ton gue, which is made of springsteel, and passed through the loop of the hook, and at such a distance from one end that it may reach the tip of the hook, is bent over the back of the loop, and its endu secured by a collar, C. This collar maybe made of malleable cast-iron, .and tits the shank of the hook, between which and itself `itreceives the bentover portion of the spring-tongue, and so secures itin place. On the back or lower portion of this collar there are formed horns d d, which, after the collar is in place, are bent, by hammering or otherwise, over the loop, and so clinch the collar to it. VOn the edges of the front portion of the collar are formed iian ges e e constituting guards, which project above the spring-tongue at the edges, and so insure the upper part of the tongue from lateral movement. The tip ofthe spring-tongue its within the recess o in the tip of the hook, and that part of the tongue is thereby also prevented' from any lateral movement.

1. The collar C, provided with horns l d and guards e e, arranged as shown and described, for the purpose set forth.
2. The iange-shaped guards e c, in combination with the collar C, on which they are formed, and the spring-tongue B, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
