ORNAMENT FOR JEELRY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 282,949, dated October 5, 1880. Application filed April 28, 1880. (Model.)
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK DIFFANY, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ornaments for Jewelry, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the improvement. Fig. 2 is an edge view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved ornament to be used in the manufacture of jewelry, so constructed that it may be made or bought in strips, cutinto pieces of suitable length, and applied to the jewelry to be ornamented.
The invention consists in constructing an ornament for jewelry of a solid strip of metal formed of alternate squares and circles, having the squares raised above the level of the circles, so that it can be cutinto pieces ofsuitable length and applied to the jewelry, as will be hereinafter fully described.
Heretofore in ornamentiug jewelry the ornaments have been made and applied to the jewelry separately, making the ornamentation of an article of jewelry a very tedious and expensive operation.
In my improvement a strip of gold or other metal is cut out with dies into a series of alternating squares, A, and circles B. The squaresjAEare raised above the level of the circles B, as shown in Fig. 2. The squaresA and circles B may be made plain or may be ornamented, as desired, or one may be made plain and the other ornamented. The squares A and circles B may be made solid, or their middle parts may be cut out, giving them a skeleton form. The strips A B are designed to be cut with dies made in the faces of rolls, so as to be formed by passing strips of sheet metal through between the said rolls.
In using the ornaments they are cut into pieces of the desired length, and are fitted and soldered to the article of jewelry, so that the labor and expense of ornament-in g the jewelry .Will be very greatly lessened.
Other ornaments may be added to the ornament A B, as desired.
By this construction the higher parts or squares can be polished, While the lower parts or circles are left colored, producing a very beautiful eflect.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent As a new article of manufacture, an ornament for jewelry, consisting of a solid strip of metal formed of alternate squares A and circles B, having the squares raised above the level of the circles, substantially as herein shown and described.
FREDERICK DIFFANY.
