UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
JAMES J. HORTON, OF ATTLEBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS.
O-RNAM'ENTAL CHAIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,102, dated November 28, 1882. Application filed August 11, 1882. tNomodel.)
10 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES J. HORTON, ofAttleborough,in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement; in Ornamental Chains; and I do hereby declare that the following specification, taken inconnection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same, is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates particularly to what are known as .gentlemens vest-chains; and my improvement consists in providing the chain with an ornamental member, which is furnished with eyes or equivalent means to connect the main chain with the hook or bar chain, and to support the drop or charm chain, as will hereinafter appear.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represents the ornamental member detached from the chain. Fig. 2 shows a chain embodying my improvement.
A is the main chain; B, the hook or bar chain; 0, the drop or charm chain; and D is the ornamental member, which is provided with eyes at d d, or equivalent means, to enable it to connect and to be connected to the other parts of the chain. As shown in the drawings, the member D is lozenge shape, and is ornamented on one of its faces by a stone set therein; but the said member may be of any other preferred contour, and one or both of its faces may be plain or may be ornamented in any desired manner, as by engraving, filigree-work, &c. The member D may also be made in two parts or halves hinged together atthe edge, and one or both halves be adapted to receive a picture, and thus serve the additional purpose of a locket.
If desired, the ornamental member D may be connected with the chain differently than shown in the drawings-as, for instance, the main and bar chains may be joined, and the member D form a connection between such jointed chains and the charm-chain and depend from the former.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As an improved article of manufacture, a watch-chain having an ornamental member, D, connecting the main chain and the barcha-in, substantially as set forth.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a watch-chain having an ornamental member, D, which connects the charm-chain with the main and bar chains, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with a watch-chain composed of a main chain, A, a bar-chain, B, and a charm-chain, O, of an ornamental meniber,1), provided with means, as described, for connecting said chains, substantially as described and shown.
JAMES J. HORTON.
