ORNAMENTAL CHAIN.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,695, dated October 25, 1881.

To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JOHN BECKER, of Providence, in the county of Providence and State ot Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of Jewelry; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description ot` the SllllE.

My invention relates to the manufacture of ornamental chains and other articlesof jewelry; and it consists in forming such an article from links formed from a blank of suitable metal and united by riveting without the use ot' solder, and it is illustrated in theaccompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side view, Fig. 2 a top view, Fig. 3 a separate view, ot' a blank from which a single link is formed; and Fig. 4, aseparate view of a completed link.

In making any article of jewelry according to my invention-such as a chainblanks A are struck out from gold, silver, or base metal. I prefer to forni these blanks in the shape shown in Fig. 3, where the blank is represented as composed ot' heads l 1, perforated, as at 2, and a narrow connecting portion, 3. At the outer end of each head is cut a recess, 4. The blanks thus formed are bent into the shape shown in Fig. 4-an operation greatly facilitated by the ease .with which the narrow portion 3 may be manipulated.

A fastening-piece, B, consisting of a metal strip bent to form a hook, 5, at each end,serves to connect the bent links A A in the manner shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The links have a substantially angular form in cross section and overlap one another, the fastening-piece passing through the perforated heads of two sepa.- ratelinks,which perforations register with each other. The bent or hooked ends of the con- 4c nectin'gstrip or fastening-piece B engage with the recesses 4t on the heads of the two outer links ot` a pair and make a firm connection.

It is evident that links of any shape perforated at the ends, capable of being bent to bring the perforations opposite each other, so as to be connected by a fastening piece with a similar link, would fall within the spirit ot' my invention.

The chain may be ot' any lengt-h and orna- 5o mented in any manner. A bracelet would be provided with any desirable kind of fastening device, and no material change of form or construction is required for that purpose.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A link for ornamental chains formed from a single piece of metal, having heads l l, perforations 22, and connecting portions 3,in com- 6o bnation with fastening-strips t'orsecuring such links to one another in a series.
