1\TITED STATES PATENT CFFICE.
THOMAS FAWCETT, OF NEWYORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARNESS-MOUNTINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,817, dated October2l, 1873; application filed I -'May 5,1873. i
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS Fnwcnrr, of
the city, county, and State of New York, have rim of a terret complete, partly in section.
Fig. 2 is a View of a metallic casting without the covering. Fig.3 is a view of the interior fastening-ring. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of Fig. 1 taken on the line a0 as. Fig. 5 is a crosssection of the ring on the line 3 3 Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
These mountings of the harness are usually covered With leather, the edges of the leather being sewed together on the inner side of the ring. Ametallic band is then slipped into the ring to cover the sewing and receive the wear. In putting the coverings on my mountings the edges of the leather are received into grooves or rabbets in the ring, which hold the edges in place when the inner ring is introduced.
a represents the ring of the terret or other mounting. a c are the grooves or rabbets therein. (1 represents the leather covering. 6
is the interior ring or bushing, which is inserted Within the main ring a, in contact with its inner surface, and over the edges of the leather, as seen in Fig. 4.
This inner ring is pushed in, and then its edges are spun or burnished or forced, by means of dies, into the leather, so that it is securely confined, and presents a smooth-wearin g inner surface for the lines or other parts of the harness.
No sewing is required for confining the covering d.
By this improvement these mountings are greatly improved in appearance, rendered more durable, and can be produced at less expense than by the old method of manufacture.
. Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The terret-ring (1-, having the insideedge grooves c c and intermediate rib, combined with the leather covering 01, having its edges fitted in said grooves, and the inner ring 0, having its edges forced down upon the leather edges, in the manner and for the purpose described.
' THOMAS FAVVOETT.
