Description

UNITED STATES .lOl-IN BAUER, OFYNEVVARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPRCVENIENT IN HARNESS-TRIMMINGS.
Spceiiicaiion thi-ming part ot' Letters Patent No. 116,536, dated July 4, 1871.
T0 all whom yit may concern.:
Be it known that l, JOHN Kirwan., of Newark, county ot' Esse,Y and State ot' N ew Jerse'v, have invented certain .lmprovements in Hariless-Trimmings, of which the 'followingl is a slieciiication:
As a llarness-maker I have found t'rom experience that lining the rings ot' liarliess-trinuniugs with rolled sheet-metal which was iirst formed as a ring', the ends soldered, and next pressed into the interior ot' thel harnessring, was of short duration, requirin frequent replacement, did not answer the purpose intended, andwas an injury to the harness, for the reason that the Jfriction ot' the reins and other' parts ot' the harness on the thin sheet-metal linin otA the rin gs soon out the liningthrough; the sharp ed gesot' the worn sheetmetal lining', in turn, cutting' the reins, and rendering` the device worse than useless.
For obviating these detects l emplovv a castinetal ring` ot' au15Y required thickness, or ot' sutlicient thickness to last without replacin as longY as the harness-rin itself, without the use ot' s4 l der, and l place this erstmetal rin g within the harness-ring', and with a mandrel or tool turn up the edges burnished, and make the cast-metal lining permanently part and parcel ot' the harness-ring, I will further explain by reference to the acconipanyii1g drawing', in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved harnessring; Fig. 2, a vertical section; Fig. 3, a horizontal section of the same; and Fin'. 4, a view ot' metallic casting previous to use.
ln the said drawing, Aiudieatcs a harness-rin or rein-guide, of which .B is the iron ii'iterior, and (l the covering ofthe ring', and l) the cast-metal lining'. The interior ot' the ringv is made ot' iiattencd form, so that the outer surface ofthe castiron lining shall tit and be held more securely therein.
The advantages derived from this cast-iron liuing-rin over a sheet-metal lining` are, cheapness and facility ot' construction, much longer wear and greater durability, smoother surface, and better appearance.
W'hat I ela-im as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A terret-ring, or similar article of harnesstrininung, constructed with a flattened interior sur tace, covered with leather, and lined with a cast ironv ring or piece, the outer periphery oli' which lits the interior of and is fastened in the covered ring, as speciiied, as a new article of ina-nut'acture.
In testimony whereof l have hereunto set my signature this 21st day ot' November, 1870.
lVitnesses: JOHN BAUER.
ARTHUR NEILL, Emmi MoL'rz.
