J. K. DODD & P. BROWER.
HAMES FOR HARNESS. 175,o53, Patented March z1;1a7e.
IL PUERS Pnomumociuma, WASHINGTON D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
JOHN K. DODD AND PETER BROWER, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
. IMPROVEMENT IN HAMES FOR HARNESS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,053, dated March 21, 1876; application filed January 29, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOHN K. DODD and PETER BROWER, of Newark, in the coun ty of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented Improvements in the Construction of Hames, and of Draft-eyes and Terrets attached thereto; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact descrip tion thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification- Figure 1 being a front-side view of one of our improved hames; Fig. 2, an inner side View of one of' our improved draft-eyes Fig. 3, an edge view of the same; Fig. 4,-- a back-side view of one of our improved terrets to be attached to the hames; Fig.5, an edge view of the same; Fig. 6, an inner-side view of one of our improved hames with the drafteye and terret attached thereto in our improved manner.
Like letters designate corresponding parts in all of the figures.
Our invention consists in the construction of hames and their draft-eyes and' terrets, for uniting them, substantially as follows First. Each hame A is constructed with a notch, a, of dovetail form, for the reception of the draft-eye, and with another notch, b, of dovetail form, for the reception of the terret.
Second. The draft-eye B is constructed with a projection, c, of dovetail form, to fit in the notch 00 of the hame; and with a hookshan'k, or projection, d, to fit around the front side of the hame and around the edge thereof, opposite to the notch a, and to lap somewhat past the same.
Third. The terret 0 is constructed with-a projection, f, of dovetail form, to fit in the notch b of the hame, and with a hook-shank or projection, g, to fit around the front side of the hame and around the edge thereof, opposite to the notch b, and to lap somewhat past the same.
Fourth. To unite the draft-eye and the terret to the hame, the dovetail-projections c and f, and the hook-shanks d and g, respectively, are swaged, or clinched, down upon the back of the halne.
The advantages which we thus obtain are, cheapness and strength of construction. We avoid the expense and trouble of the usual modes of welding, brazing, or riveting the draft-eyes and terrets to the hames. And the draft-eyes may be made of malleable iron, cast of any desired pattern, thereby avoiding the expenseof steel dies to form the same, as has been necessary in the old method of construction.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Hames formed with notchesa b, of dovetail form, to receive corresponding projections on the shanks of the draft-eyes and terrets to be attached thereto, substantially as herein specified.
2. Draft-eyes and terrets formed with dovetail projections, and with shanks to hook around and embrace the halnes, substantially as herein specified.
3. Hames constructed with their draft-eyes and terrets embracing them, and united thereto by swaging or clinching, substantially as herein specified.
JOHN K. DODD. PETER BROWER.
