Description

UNITED STATES JOHN W. ODANIEL AND CHARLES E. WALLS, 0E cLovEEDALE, TND.
TRACE-CARRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 259,772, dated June 20, 1882.
Application filed April 22, 1882. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN W. ODANIEL and CHARLES E. WALLS, of Cloverdale, in the county of Futnam and State of Indiana,
` have invented a new and useful Improvement in Trace-Carriers for Harness, of which the following is a specification. l
Our invention relates to improvements in trace-carriers for harness, by which the tugs or chains are carried when not hitched either on or oft the horse, and the objects of our improvements are, tirst, in providing a carrier through which the back and hip straps of harness shall pass without cuttngor sewing them to the carrier; second, to provide in-V verted hooks .that shall lie'as dat as possible to the hip-straps; and, third,to decrease the labor, material, and expense of attaching tracecarriers. We attain these objects by the construction of the form illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top view ot' the carrier. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the carrier fitted to harness with tug and chain attached.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The inverted hooksA A, slots B B', and a metal plate with rivet-hole C constitutevthe carrier. To the metal plate are formed the slots B B. so that the loops outside the slots B B shall beraised above the metal plate sufficienti ly to allow the back and hip straps to pass on a straight line under the loops and over the metal plate, as shown in Fig. 2, to the loops at Bf, and from their tops are formed the invertedly-turned hooks A A. We prefer to carry out this feature of our invention as shown at Fig. 2, where it will be seen that the hooks A A are raised from' the loops B and have an inverted turn on the hip-straps just outside of slots B.
In applying this invention to harness the back-strap D is passed through the slots B and the hip-strap E is passed under the hooks A A and through the slots B. Both back and hip straps are secured in place by a rivet through the rivet-'hole C and through both straps, as shown at Fig. 2. Underneath the straps and carrier is secured the safety-pad F. The tug or chain is attached and carried as shown at G and H, in Fig. 2.
Having thus described our invention, `we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A trace-carrier composed of the Hat metal plate provided with slots B B for the passage of the back and hip straps, the central rivethole, C, and the invertedly-turned hooks A A, one at each side, constructed and adapted to be applied to harness, as set forth.
JOHN W. ODANIEL. CHARLES E. WALLS.
