Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM M. SMITHER, OF KEENE, KENTUCKY.
.TRACE-CARRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,807, dated February 19, 1884. Application filed November 12, 1883. (No model.)
T at whom, it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAlVI M. SMITHEE, a citizen of the =United States, residing at Keene, in the county of Jessamine and. State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trace- Carriers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. 7
This invention relates to trace-chain carriers for plow and similar harness; and its objects are to carry the chain, to provide a means for holding the back-band in place, and to prevent the driving-lines from being caught or interfered with. I accomplish these objects by means which will be hereinafter set forth.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, Figure 1' represents a plan view of the carrier attached to the backband, and also a section of chain. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section of one side of the carrier and back-band.
. of the metal at the't'op and middle being re moved or omitted for lightness. From the metal cut away at the center of the plate sufficient is left to form a tongue, D. The plate is bent in such manner that its lower end will be doubled under the upper portion, thus forming two loops, 0 0, through which the chain passes. The tongue D, it willbe seen, is bent inward, so that it cannot only be made to catch into the links of the chain, but will obviate any danger of the lines catching when" they drop upon the outside of the loops. The
plate is bolted or riveted to the band A by the rivets a," x, the rivet :10 confining the two. portions of the plate and the band together at the same time. The back portion of the loops lying against the band, all wear and tear on said band is prevented. When the chain is adside of the tongue, it (the link) is kept more se-' 'curely in place; 1
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new,-and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an article of manufacture, a trace-carrier constructed, as herein described, of a single piece of metal having formed upon it a corrugated tongue, two unbroken supportingloops, and its lower end curved under and projectingupward, and adapted to be secured to the body of the carrier and to the back-band of the harness by the same rivets, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WM. M. SMITHER.
