TRACE=CARRIER- SPECIFICATION forming part of Lettere Patent No. 658,121, dated september 18, 1900.
Application filed Deeeinber 18l 1899. Serial No. '740,747- (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER ALBERT PEUD- HOMME, a citizen of the United States, residand State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to buckles especially adapted for use as back-band buckles for harness employed in connection with agricultural implements and machines.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a buckle of simple, inexpensive, and durable construction which Will permit of a ready adjustment of the harness to raise or' lower the working position of Van implement or machine Without unfastening or in any Wise manipulating the back-band.
A further object of the invention is to provide a buckle so constructed as to cause the links of the chain ordinarily attached to the back-band buckle to lie flat on opposite sides of the securing-pin, thus avoiding chafing or abrasion of the draft-animal.
The construction of the improvement Will be fully described hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and its novel features will be defined in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a top plan view of a back-band buckle embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. l'.
The reference-numeral 1 designates a rectangular plate constituting the base of the buckle and formed with parallel transverse slots 2 and provided at one end with a triangular extension 3 and at its opposite end with a vertical iiange 4. From opposite sides of the base l project perforated ears 5 and 6, serving as bearings for a clamping-tongue 7 of triangular form to correspond to the eXtension 3 of the plate and provided with a downwardly-extending liange 8, formed with teeth or prongs 9 to engage the back-strap 10. The
plate, as shown. in Fig. 2.
back-strap passes through the slots 2 of the 11 designatesa casing of invertedV shape vin cross-section, serving as a guard or keeper for the pin 12, which secures the chain 13. The casing ll is anged at its opposite edges and riveted to the base and is formed with a plurality of parallel slots 14, adapted to receive a link of the -chain 13. The pin 12 is threaded adjacent to its outer headed end 15 and passes through an internally-threaded opening formed in the iiange 4 midway of the width of the plate 1. Thus the pin 12 is secured in position removably.
It will be noted that by the construction above described the links at either side of the pin 12 are caused to lie flat, as shown in Fig. 3, thus avoiding injury to the animal.
The buckle is adapted to be quickly applied and adjusted upon the back-strap and is firmly held by the pivoted clamping-tongue.
1.v A back-'band buckle comprising a baseplate having an upwardly-projecting flange at one end, formed with a threaded opening; a clamping-tongue adjacent to the opposite end of the base-plate; a casing or keeper secured to the base-plate and formed with transverse slots; and a threaded pin extending through the opening in the flange, and within said casing.
2. A back-band buckle comprising a baseplate formed with parallel transverse slots, and an end extension, and at one end with an upwardly-projecting ange formed with a threaded opening; a pivoted clamp adjacent to the other end of the plate; a casing secured to the base-plate and formed with parallel transverse slots; and a threaded pin extending through the opening in said flange, and within said casing.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
