' clear, and exact description of the UNITED STATES PATENT Qr'rroa TOWNSEND H. OOOKSEY, OF OARTHAGE, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE-COLLARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,416, dated June 6, 1876; application filed May 13, 1876.
To all 'whom it may concern: 7
Be it' known that I, ToWNSEND' H. GO0K- SEY, of Carthage, in the county of Jasper and State of Missouri, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Horse-Collars and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a plan View of my horse-collar; and Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section thereof. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views of the same.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a horse-collar, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing, A A represent the the two pads which form the belly of the collar, and which are made in the usual manner, with the addition of a metal plate or bar, a, inserted in each pad along the side where the rim is to come. The rim is also made in two parts, B B, of malleable or wrought iron bent in form to fit over the edges of the pads A A,
and provided with spurs, as shown, and are then fastened by screws b b entering the plates an in the pads. At the top the collar is fastened in the usual manner by strap and buckle,
which is not to be loosened except when changing from larger to smaller horses, and vice versa. At the bottom of the collar the two metallic rims are formed with sockets G C, which fit one in the other, and the two parts there connected by a strap, D. This fastening is to be used for harnessing and unharnessing.
By making the rim of the collar of metal, haines may be entirely dispensed with, staples d d being riveted in a strong and substantial manner to the rim for the attachment of the hame-tug hooks E.
What' I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv 1. A horse-collar formed of the two pads A A, with metal plates a or inserted therein, and the metallic spur-rims B B, fastened thereto by screws 1) b, substantially as described.
2. The metallic rims B B, formed with the v sockets O O, in combination with the pads A A, and strap 1), as and for the purposes herein set forth. y
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses. p
TOWNSEND H. OOOKSEY. Witnesses:
AUGUSTUS HAMILTON, EDWARD W. HARPER.
