ROBERT G. HANFORD, JR., OF NEWARK, NEV JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO CRANE 8: CO., OE SAME PLAGE.
HARN ESS ATTACH Nl ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 318,895, dated May 26, 1885.
Application filed May 12, 1884. (No model.)
.To @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, RoBERT G. H iNroRD, J r.,of Newarlnin the county of Essex and State' of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Harness, of which the following is a specification.
My improvement relates to that part of a harness known as a trace-carrier, and is superior to any trace-carrier now in use, in that it provides a means of securing a nurnber of straps which concentrate or converge together without the necessity for stitching or riveting, and has hooks for holding the end of the traces when the traces are not in use.
The following is a detailed description of my improvement, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Figure l of the dra-wings is a top view of a device embodying my improvement, the various straps which it unites being delineated in dotted outline. Fig. 2 is a side view ot` such device, the straps being omitted. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section of the device with straps in place, and Fig. 4 isa transverse section of the device with straps in place.
Similar letters ot' reference designate corresponding parts in all the gures.
The device has a frame-like portion or bar, a, which may advantageously. although not necessarily, be of circular or ring shape. From this frame-like portion extend i'our rectangular loops, b b c c. The loops b b are opposite each other, and the loops c c are intermediately arranged, but opposite each other. The side bars ot' all theseloops extend slightly upward in an outward direction, and consequently the cross-bars of the loops are somewhat elevated relatively to the frame-like port-ion n.. Opposite each loop there extends from the frame-like portion c a hook-shaped tongue, t. As each of these tongues leaves the framelike portion c, it extends slightly downward, and at the outer end it extends upward. All these parts may be cast together, of malleable iron or other suitable metal, in one piece.
The loop b is designed to receive a strap, e, which extends to a saddle-tree or to haines. The loop b is intended to receive a strap, e', that goes to the crupper, and the loops c c are for the reception of side straps, e2 e3. The straps are provided near those ends which are to loe fastened to the device with suitable holes for fitting the tongues. To attach each of these straps its end is first slipped onto the proper tongue, the other end is passed through the frame-like portion over the top of the tongue, onto which the strap has been slipped, (see particularly Fig. 3,) and under the cross-bar of the loop which is adjacent to this tongue. ln this way the straps will be effectively received together without any sewing.
Between the loop b and the loops c c' hooks f extend at about an angle of forty-tive degrecs. These hooks extend downwardly lat erally and toward the loops c c.
The chains or hooks at the ends of traces maybe engaged with these hooks f when the traces are not in use. with the other parts.
What l claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A device consisting of a frame-like portion, such as a, a numberof loops, b b c c', extending therefrom, crossbars on said loops elevated relatively to the frame-like portion, and hook-shaped tongues f, extending downwardly and obliquely from the frame-like portion opposite the loops and toward the crossbars oi'the loops, said device being in combination with straps severally passed under an outer portion of a loop. up through the loop, and over and through the frame-like portion, and having its end after passing through the frame-like portion turned under and engaged with a hook-shaped tongue opposite the loop, substantially as specified.
2. vrl`he device consisting of the loops Z b c c', extending from a common bar, hookshaped tongues t, extending downward and obliquely from said common bar, and the hooks, f, also extending from said common bar and made integral therewith, substantially as specilied.
3. The device consisting of loops extending from a common har, tongues extending from said bar opposite the loops, and hooks made integral with and extending from the bar between adjacent loops downwardly and thence laterally toward certain oi' the loops, and serving to support traces, substantially as specitied.
