NPETEPS FHOTOLITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON, D c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIcn.
PARDON BOYDEN AND JOHN H. VAN NESL OF AMSTERDAM, NEW YORK, ASSIGNQRS TO JACOB H. LAWRENCE, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE-COLLAR GUARDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,887, dated February 22, 1876; applinatinn 6 ml October 21, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, PARDON BOYDEN and JOHN H. VAN NEST, of Amsterdam, in the county of Montgomery and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse-Collar Guards; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and'exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to horse collars; and it consists in a metallic or vulcanite band or strap, provided with a flanged clip near each end and center, fastened upon the inner side of the lower end of the collar, for the purpose of preserving the shape of the collar and rendering it more durable to wear, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. 7
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the lower end of a horse-collarembodying our invention.
. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the band or strap detached.

metal, or other durable vulcanite material, about nine inches in length, and so made as to conform to the surface of the inside lower neck of the collar A, covering in width that is formed another flange-clip, D, which passes around the inner lower part of the collar, and is bent down into the collar-groove, for the purpose of holding the metallic band firmly to itsplace. By this invention the collar is made more durable and strong, and the form of the collar is preserved until the material of which the collar is made is entirely worn out. Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with a horse-collar, the metallic or vulcanite band B, provided with the central loop or clip D, which passes around the inner part of the collar, and bent down into the collar-groove, and with flanged clip C near each end, as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands and seals this 8th day of September, 1875.
