side lining made of steel.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES HORNEE, oF HALIFAX, COUNTY oF YORK, ENG-LAND.
THIMBLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,910, dated J une 11, 1889. Application filed June 21,1886. Serial No. 205,824. (No model.) Patented in England .Tune 14, 1884, No. 8,954.
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, CHARLES HORNER, of Halifax, in the county of York, England, a subject of Her Majesty Queen Victoria, have invented new and usefull Improvements in Thirnbles, for WhichI have obtained a patent in Great Britain, No. 8,954, bearing date .I une 14, 1884, of which the following is a description.
Thimbles have heretofore been made of gold or silver, which are objectionable because of not having sufficient rigidity or durability, so that they are liable after wear to be punctured by the needle; and they have also been made of steel, which is objectionable because of its cheap appearance and liability to rust.
My invention aims to produce a thirnble which shall have the appearance of being made of a precious metal, and shall be as durable and as free from danger of puncturing as though made of steel. I attain this object by the construction illust-rated in the accompanying' drawings, in Which- Figure l is an elevation of the inside lining ofthe thimble. Fig. 2 is an elevation of an in- Fig. 3 is an elevation of the outer covering. Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation showing' the three parts in position, one within the other, and drawn to enlarged scale in order to clearly illustrate the invention.
Like letters refer to like parts throughout the several views.
In the construction of thimbles according to this invention, I employ an outer casing of silver or precious metal and correspondingin the outer casing l is placed a steel cup or lining 8, and within the latter is inserted an inner lining 4, of silver, forming the interior of the thimble, and having a hollow .flange 5, whichineloses the shoulder 2 of the outer silver casing Land is burnished over the shoulder 2, thereby completing the thiinble, which has a steel inner lining which cannot be pierced by the needle when the outer covering l becomes Worn.
I am A aware that prior.. to my invention thinibles having ends of steel have been made, and I therefore do not claim the combination of steel and silver or precious metals, broadly; but
lVhat I do claim as myin vention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A thimble composed of an outer casing and an inner lining, both of precious metal, in combination with a steel core interposed between said casing and lining', substantially as set forth, whereby a thimble vhaving the appearance ofthe precious metal andthe durability of steel is formed.
l CHARLES HORNER.
