COBBLERS KIT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 21, 1919.
Application filed May 24, 1918. Serial No. 236,422.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH MICHKI, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Terre Haute, in the county of Vigo and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cobblers Kits, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a kit or outfit for use by menders of shoes, cobblel's, and the like, and the principal objects of the invention are: (1) to provide a portable kit adapted to be used by journeymen cobblers who repair shoes in the home, factory or shop, as they travel from place to place, and adapted also to be used by farmers, mechanics, laborers and others who repair their own shoes at home; (2) to provide a novel kit of this character including a compartmented box for suitably holding the cobblers tools, and for carrying standards, adapted to be in closed within the box when not in use and to be extended to support the box when in use, the box being equipped also with a permanent base capable of operatively receiving interchangeable last shanks or supports; and (3) to provide a cobblers kit which is simple in construction, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and which is relatively small and light so that it can be readily moved about or carried by the cob bler from place to place.
With these objects in view and others, the invention resides in the details of construction. and in the arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described, defined in the claims, and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective, showing the kit as it appears when collapsed or folded. i
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, taken approximately in the direction of the line 2-2 of Fig. 4:, but showing the device set up with its supporting standards extended and with a last shank applied in its base for use, the cover plate here being omitted.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view,.the cover plate being omitted.
Fig. 4 is an underneath plan view, the hinged bottom plates being omitted.
Fig. 5 is a vertical cross sectional view, taken approximately in the direction of the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged fragmental perspective view of an end portion of the kit, illustrating in particular the base support for the last shank.
Fig. 7 is a vertical cross sectional view, taken approximately in the direction of the line 77 of Fig. 4, the hinged bottom plates partition 12 preferably extending the entire length of the sides 10 and 11 so that the 0pposite ends of the former lie flush with the opposite ends of the latter.
The upper compartment is inclosed by end pieces 13 and 14, which connect the parallel sides and which extend from the partition 12 upwardly to meet the top plate 15, the opposite sides of which are provided with integral projections or strips 16 which slidably fit in suitable grooves provided in parallel sides so that the top cover may be removed or applied at will.
The lower compartment is inclosed by the end pieces 17 and 18, which connect the parallel sides and which extend from the partition 12 to meet a pair of like bottom plates 19, connected, one each, to the respective side pieces by means of hinges as 20 so as to swing flat against the bottom edges of the said side pieces and said end pieces. To hold the bottom plates 19 in closed position, I secure to each of them, as best shown in Fig. 7, an eye screw 21; and to one of the eye screws I pivot at 22 a latch 23 having a hooked end-adapted to engage the other eye screw.
Secured by screws as 24 to the under-' neath side of the horizontal partition 12, adj acent each end thereof, is a bracket plate 25 each formed with a pair of spaced integral lugs or bearings 26. These lugs carry pintles 27 upon which are pivotally engaged the ears 28, formed integral with the respective standards 29 and 30. As best illustrated in Fig. 4, the standard 29 is formed with two spaced legs 31, while the other standard 30 is formed with only one leg 32 which is adapted, when the standards are folded against the underneath side of the partition 12 to lie between the said legs 81, each of the legs terminating in an integral flat foot 33. Formed integral with each standard'is an offset angular portion 34 having a flat plate 34 in the free end of which is provided a square notch 35 for the reception of a spring pressed catch 36, pivoted in the bracket 25 to work in a suitable opening therethrough and also in an opening 86 provided in the partition 12. When a standard is. moved into extended position, as best shown in Fig. 2, for the support of the box, the plate 34 lies fiat against the bracket 25, bracing the standard in vertical position against outward movement, the spring catch 36 being formed with an offset lug 37 to engage the underneath side of the offset plate 34 so as to lock the standard against inward movement.
In this manner I provide hinged standards, adapted to be extended for the support of the box when work is tobe performed, and adapted also to be swung fiat against the underneath side of the partition so that the bottom plates 19 may be closed and locked. When the standards are swung into extended position, these bottom plates are permitted to drop downwardly on each side thereof as best shown in Fig. 5.
As a means of adjustably securing the last shank or support in. position for operatively sustaining interchangeable lasts, I provide, as best shown in Fig. 6, a base or casting 38, which is formed at its lower end with oppositel extending lugs 39 adapted to be secured by means of screws as 10 to the top side of the partition 12, and which also has.
formed upon its rear side other like lugs 41 adapted similarly to be secured flat against the end piece it. Upon its front side near its lower end, the casting 38 is also made with a pair of integral lugs 42, between which is pivoted a catch or dog 4-3 having a notched end 4ft. designed to engage .the teeth 45, formed on the integral web 46 of the last shank 4L7; whereby said last shank, when inserted. in the opening 48 provided vertically through the casting 38, may be supported at the elevation desired. A push spring 49, set in a suitable opening provided in. the casting 88 (Fig. 2) and connected with the latch 43, serves to normally tiltthe. latch into position, for engaging the teeth of the last shank. WVith the catch a3 is also formed an integral thumb piece 50 by, which the catch may be conveniently swung on its axisagainst thetensionof thespring to provide for the disengagement of the notched end tiLWith theteeth of the laststand'ard. The vertical angular opening 48 provided Copies 01- this patent may beobtained for five cents each, by
in the casting 38 is adapted to receive the standardized ends of the last shanks, which may vary in length in an obvious manner. The upper end of the last shank as 47 may be provided with the usual opening for the reception of the standardized stems or interchangeable lasts 51.
The base 38 is preferably secured in position intermediate the width of the box, so that on each side thereof there may be provided spacedly from the partition 12, receptacles as 52 for conveniently holding shoe nails and other supplies. In the compartment above the horizontal partition 12, may be carried the lasts and the shanks therefor, the various tools which the cobbler uses in his work, and also a supply of leather and other repairing materials.
Riveted to the end plates 13 and 14 is a flexible strap 53, which may be swung over the shoulders whereby conveniently to carry the kit from place to place.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A cobblers kit including side plates, a horizontal partition of the same. length as the side plates connecting the same between their top and bottom. edges, top end plates mounted on said partition and connecting the side plates to provide a top compartment, other end plates secured underneath the partition and connecting the side plates to form a bottom compartment, drop bottom plates and means for locking them in closed position, a removable top plate, a pair of brackets securedto the underneath side of said partition one near each end thereof, and a standard hingedly secured to each bracket and adapted to be extended below the said bottom plates when dropped for the upstanding support of the box.
2. A cobblers kit including side plates, a horizontal partition of the same length as the side plates connecting the same between their top and bottom edges, top end plates mounted on said partition and connecting the side plates to provide a top compartment, other end plates secured underneath the partition and connecting the side plates to form a bottom compartment, drop bottom plates and means for locking them in closed position, a pair of standards hingedly carried by said partition. and interfolded above said bottom plates, said standards being adapted to be swung downwardly to extend below said bottom plates when dropped to support the box in elevated position, and means for locking the standards in extended position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
JOSEPH MICHKI.
