Description

UNTTED STATES ASAHEL PIERPONT, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
IM PROVED Boor-JAC K.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 54,945, dated May 22, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ASAHEL PIERPONT, of the city and county ot New Haven,in the State of Connecticut, have invented a new and use` ful Improvement in Folding Boot-Jacks 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction, character, and operation of the same, retercnce being had to the accompanying drawings, which make part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the bootjack standing as ready for use. Fig. 2 is a perspective view ot' the same when folded, ready to put into the pocket.
My improvement consists in making the boot-jack in two parts, and then joining those two parts together by a hinge-joint, so that they may bereadily folded together to put into the pocket or elsewhere when not wanted f'or use, as when traveling, Sto.
I make the forked or pronged part, which is to receive and embrace the boot-heel, of malleable cast-iron or any other suitable material, substantially as representedat A, Fig. l, and indicated at A, Fig. 2, consisting of the bar part A, the two prongs or jaws B and B, and the two supports or standards C and C.
I make the prongs or jaws B and B inthel shape of plate and spline, or ribbed, as indicated iu Figs. l and 2, or in any other shape in the cross-section which is deemed best, at any time, for combining strength with lightness, and I set them in the proper shape to re ceive and embrace the heel of the boot, and I make the standards or supports C and C of the proper length to suitably elevate the jaws B and B.
I make the treadle part D otA malleable ca stron or any other suitable material in the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or in any other shape or form which fancy may dictate, provided it is within a reasonable compass and form to carry in the pocket or elsewhere, ior traveling, 815e. v
Having made the two parts as before described, I secure them together with a suitable hinge orjoint, as shown at a, Fig. 2 and indicated at a, Fig. l; and I secure this hinge or joint to the two parts A and D by suitable rivets or screws, as indicated at b I) and c c,
`Fig. 1, and at c c, Fig. 2, when the boot-jack will be ready for use or sale.
To use my improved boot-jack I unfold it and rest it on its standards or supports C and C, as represented in Fig. 1. I then place one of my feet across the part D, in the direction indicated by the line H H, and place the heel of the boot on the other foot between theljaws, as at A, Fig. 1, and draw oftthe bootin the usual way; and when I have drawn off my boots, I fold the boot-jack, as represented in Fig. 2, and place it in my pocket or in any other convenient place until I again want to use it.
What l claim as my inventiomand desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of' the two parts A and D for a folding boot-jack, when hinged laterally and constructed, arranged, and ltted for use substantially as herein described and set forth.
'ASAHEL PIERPONT.
