ALBERT S. WILKINSON, OF PAWTUCKET, RHODE ISLAND. Letters Patent No. 65,144, dated Zll'ay 28, 1867.
IMPROVED HORSE-SHOE.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY coucunn:
Be it known that I, ALBERfr S. WILKINSON, of'lawtucket, in the county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island,- have invented a new and .useful improvement in Hinge-Jointed Horse-Shoeg and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same sufficient to enable one skilled in the art to which the invention appertains to makense of it, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a top view of my invention.
Figure 2 iso side view of the same; and
Figure 3 is a rear View.
Figure 4 is a view of an elastic spring.
The object of this invention is to improve jointed expanding horse-shoes so as to overcome the present practical objections thereto,- and allo the feet of the animal to expand under pressure, as nature designed; and it consists in having a. continuous dlip surrou nding the horses foot, together with a toe-clip and heel-clips of such form that the nail or screw-fastenings are dispensed with, and the shoe madcan adjustable one, and also in making an elastic connection between the two hcelsof the shoe by means of a steel spring, or by other elasticmaterial.
A O, in the accompanying drawings, represent the body of the shoe, the part 0 being hinged to A by the tapering pivot, g, and this joint is placed on one side of the toe, so that a toe-clip, a, may be used. A continuous clip, a e e, is employed, and the heel-clips, c, arcprovicled'with arms, 0 so formed as to hold the shoe to the foot in connection with the toe-clip a, so that no nail or scrcw-fastenings are required. L is an elastic connection connecting the two heels of the shoe, to hold them on the foot and allon lateral expansion thereof. The rms e e of the heel-clips are so formed as to reach up and curve in over the top of the coronet, and thereby hold the heel of the shoe to the foot, While the the is held by the toe-clip a. A steel spring, L, fig. 4, having buttons, Z Z, upon its ends, is used to button the heels together, thebuttons Z Z being placed in the buttonholes is k, fig. 3, by compressing the heel of the foot, so that when released the buttons engage with the slots on the inner'edges of the button-holes, as seen in fig. 3, or. the spring may be placed in the heel-clips by springing or expanding the spring. By these means the shoe is made adjustable, and may be readily removed or adjusted. In practice but one joint, 9, may be used, instead of two, as one joint admits of the expansion of -the heel, and allows the shoe to be removed from or to beadjustcd to the foot with as much facility as when the two or more are'employedl With this mode of fastening, and when no nails are used as fastenings, but one joint, g, is necessary, placed at the side of the toe-clip, as described. The elastic or spring connection between the heel-clip may be a rubber strap, or may be made of steel or other elastic material, operating substantially as represented. d d represent bar-clips projecting inwardly beneath the heels.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-' 1. I claim an elastic or spring connection L, for connecting the heels of expanding shoes, substantia-lly in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a jointed horse-shoe, as described, and having a continuous clip, I claim the toe-clip a and heel-clips e 1:, provided yvith the projecting arms 1: e, in combination with the elastic spring connection L, substantially as described.
ALBERT S. WILKINSON.
