Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES FULTON, OF ZANESVILLE, OHIO.
IMPROVED WOODEN-SOLED BOOT AND SHOE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES FULTON, of Zanesville, in the county of Muskingum and State of Ohio, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Wooden Soled Boots and Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication, in which- Figure l represents a sectionall side elevation of this invention. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan ofthe same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention consists in the combination of a double wooden sole-that is to say, an inner and outer wooden solewith a double flexible shank joined to the inner and outer parts ot' the sole at one end and at the other end to the outerheel and theinner heel or heel-piece, or having the inner thickness ofthe shank extended so far back as to make an inner heel or heel-piece, and having the upper of the boot or shoe fastened between the inner and outer sole, between the inner and outer thickness of the shank, and between the outer heel an'd the inner heel or heel-piece.
A represents a boot or shoe the upper ot which is fastened between the inner sole, B, and the outer sole, O, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. These soles are made ot1 wood, and they are drawn together by screws a, or by any other suitable means, as shown. The edge of the upper is h'rmly clamped between the two soles.
The heel D is also made of wood, and is composed ot an inner and outer part, which are connected by screws b or other suitable means, and between which the upperis lirmly clamped. The connection between the heel and the sole is effected by the shank E, which is made oi' leather or other suitable material. This shank is also composed of an inner and outer part, the outer part being secured to the outer part of the sole and heel and the inner part to the inner part of the sole and heel, as clearly shown in Fig. l ot' the drawings. Between the two parts of the shank the upper is secured, and said two parts are fastened together by rivets c or other suitable means.
It desired, the heel and the toe part and other parts of the sole can be protected byiron plates d, which may be secured to the same by screws e or other suitable means, as shown in the drawings.
The combination ot the double exible shank with the double wooden sole admits the inT troduction and fastening' ot' the edge ot' the upper between the two thicknesses entirely around the bottom otl the boot and shoe, substantially as the same is introduced and fastened in the donble-soled wooden shoe heretofore manufactured, in which the wood extends under the whole length of the bottom, while the introduction of the double flexible shank gives to the boot or shoe a degree of pliability under the pressure and movement of the foot in walking which cannot be obtained when the wood extends the whole length ofthe shoe.
I do not claim as my invention the use of a tleXibleshankin connection with wooden-soled shoes generally; but
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. An improvement in the manufacture ot' boots and shoes having a double-that is to say, an inner and an outer-wooden sole by combining the wooden sole with a double dexible shank joined to the outer and inner parts ot the wooden sole at one end and at the other to the outer and inner parts ot the heel, or as the manufacturer may prefer, having the inner thickness ot' the shank extended so far back as to make an inner heel or heel-piece, admitting the edge ot` the Lipper ot' the boot or shoe to be fastened between the inner and outer soles, and between the inner and outer shank and the inner and outer heel or heelpiece, substantially as hereinbefore described.
2. The combination of the flexible shank with the double wooden sole, substantially as herein described.
