IMPROVEMENTIN BOOTS AND SHOES.

Spcciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 37,233, dated December 23, 1862.

To all whom it may concern,.-

Be it known that I, OLIVIER LAERENIRE, ot the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boots and Shoes and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a longitudinal vertical section of my invention, the line x x, Fig. 2, indicating the plane of section. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan of the same. Fig. 3 is atransverse vertical section of the same, taken in the plane indicated by the line y y, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a similar section, the plane ot' section being' indicated by the line z z, Fig. 2.

Similar letters of reference in the several views indicate corresponding parts.

The object ot' this-invention is to 'produce cheap, durable. and easy boots or shoes.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.

A represents a metallic frame, cast of brass, malleable iron, or any other suitable material, in the form ot the sole of boots or shoes, and provided with a number of holes, a, to receive rivets or screws, which serve to secure said frame to the inner sole of a boot or shoe, B. Small plates, b, which are placed on the in. side 0I' the inner sole, form the nuts for the screws, and these screws ought to be made slightly tapering, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, so that they will hold the frame tight, even if the latter has been worn down to a very thin plate. Instead of screws or rivets, however, the frame A may be fastened by means of a thin metallic vplate with a dovetailed socket, as will be presently more fully described. This frameis lled in with a piece, C, of hard wood, or other suitable material capable to resist moisture and to protect the foot against the iniiuence of the weather.

D is a metallic plate, which extends from the end of the frame A to the heel, a-nd which is fastened to the inner sole of the boot or shoe B by means of rivets b', or in any other convenient manner. This plate is curved to correspond with the shape of the foot under the instep, so that it supports the foot between the heel and the toes. Its rear end forms a dovetailed socket, c, (see Fig. 4,) to receive the heel-frame E. This frame is cast of brass, or malleable iron, or any other suitable material, similar to the frame A, and it is provided at its inner edge with a groove, d, to fit into the dovetailed socket c, and it is further secured to the inner sole of the boot or shoe by means ot one or more screws, e, as clearly shown in Figs. l and 4 of the drawings. Theheel-'rame is also filled in with hard wood or other suitable material, similar to the frame A, and by extending the plate D with its dovetailed socket c clear back under said heel-frame the latter is firmly retained, and the ioot is fully protected against moisture. The frame A might be fastened to the inner sole by asimilar plate with a dovetailed socket, as previously remarked.

The joint between the plate D and frame A is protected by a piece of india-rubber, f, or any other watertight liexible material, which extends somewhat beyond the edge of the fra-me and of the plate being fastened to the inner sole by the same means which retain the frame and plate. By these means the sole is permitted to accommodate itself to the motions ofthe foot, and at the same time the moisture is not permitted to pass in between the plate I) and frame A.

From this description it will be readily understood how by my invention the labor of attaching soles to boot or shoes is considerably reduced, and, furthermore, a sole of superior durability and convenience is produced.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent as an improved article of manufacture- A boot or shoe provided with a dovetailed plate, D, grooved heel-frame E, and sole-frame A, all made and united in the manner herein shown and described.
