ALBERT S. WILKINSON, OF PAWTUCKET, RHODE ISLAND. Letters Patent No. 65,145, dated May 28, 1867.
- fithe fidphule rcfemt'tn in these 3mm @gzteut rum makiuu mart at 113: szmu.
TO :ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, ALBERT S. WILKfNSON, of Pawtucket, in thecounty of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful improvement in Horse- Shoes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, suflicient to enable one skilled in the art to which the invention appertains to make use of it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 is a. rear view of my improvedshoe; and
Figure 2-is a bottom view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the severhl figures.
The object of this invention is to provide an adjustable orfdetachable shoe of cheap construction.
In the accompanying drawings, A a represent a double shoe, having an. expansion joint, 12 0, at the toe of the shoe, to allow the heels of the shoe to expand laterally, the shoe being open at the heel. jj are-projecting heel-rests or bar-clips, attached to the shoe near the heels, and b b are heel-elips.- B is a broad toe-clip, having the loop 0 attached at its upper end, through which the bandf is made to pass. This band is made in two parts, each of which is attached to the heel-clips by the buttons g g, there being holes made in the bands through which the but'tons are inserted. The two 'ends oi the bands are connected together by means of the screw-bolt h, to which a nut is attached. In fig. 1 both heels are accurately fitted by their clips, and the heels of the shoe expand with the foot. The expansion joint in this case is formed at the toe by slitting the lower plate a entirely across, as shown at n, fig 2, and by slitting the upper plate A across, from the inside .edge of the plate to the toe-clip B, so that the toe-clip acts as a spring joint at this point, to allow lateral expansion and contraction of the heel. The plates a are slitted so as to break joints, as shown at'n o, fig. 1. The detachable method of securing the sustaining bands to the shoes facilitates their adjustment to the foot or their removal, and also facilitates the repair of the shoe. In thisshoe the false plate a, which takes all the wear, is cheaply renewed, and, when worn out, is easily repaired, so that the other parts have great praeticaldurability. The false plate a may be secured to the shoe in any suitable. manner. The upper plate A in this shoe is made of steel, while the lower plate is made of iron.. The use ofsteel in the upper or permanent part of the shoe admits of the various parts, such as the clips, which are a part of the plate A, being made lightcrthan if made of iron.
Having thus fullydescribed my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. I claim in double shoes, an expansion joint, which consists in slitting the upper and lower plates laterally, so as to break joints, so that the toe-clip acts as a spring joint. to allow the heels of the shoe to expand laterally, substantially in the manner and for the purpose'sct forth.
2. 'I claim the double shoe A a, having an expansion joint, as described, in combination with the toe-clip 13, provided with a loop, a, and retaining bands, ff, substantially as described.
3. I claim the double shoe A a, having an expansion joint, as described, in combination with the toe-'clip B, provided; with a loop, a, retaining bands, ff, and heel-rests, jj, the whole being constructed and operated ALBERT S. WILKINSON. Witnesses:
E. P. PATERSON, W. W. Bnoncsrr.
