UNITED STATES` PATENT i ROBERT STOCKS SIMISTER, OF FLIXTON, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO ARTHUR OL-OWES, OF URMSTON, AND ALFRED LLOYD HULME, OF MANCHESTER,
ENGLAND.
TOE-PROTECTOR FOR BOOTS OR SHOES.
SPECIFICATION forming vpart of Letters Patent No. 616,810, dated December 27, 1898.
' Application led February 14, 1898. Serial No. 670,246. (No model.) l
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT Srocks Sinis- TER, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of Flixton, county of Lancaster, England, have invented a cer- Y tain new and useful Improved Toe-Protector for Boots or Shoes, (for which I have made application for a patent in Great Britain, No. 24,095, bearing date October 19, 1897,) of which the following is a specification.
The objects of my invention are to construct a protecting-cap for the toes-of boots, which shall be attached to the boot without the use of any separate nails, screws, or spikes, Aand which shall protect not only the tread of the sole, but also the front'of the sole and the front of the upper.
My invention .consists of a metal toe-protecting cap out from one piece of sheet steel orv other metal and made of a shape to iit the toe end of the sole and with an extension partially covering the toe of the boot-upper. The portion extending along the sole of the boot is divided into one, two, or more flanges, whose ends are tapering and sharpened and turned upward to form a spike, or the end of each l 't l vation of a toe-cap constructed in accordance with my invention, of embracingthe sole and a2 protecting the upper. Fig. 2 shows aseotional elevation looking in the same direction as Fig. 1, the flanges being shown'at a3 and vits length. In Fig. 4 is shown the method of the spikes at a4. Fig. 3 shows a plan view of the appliance, wherein four anges a3 are shown, each vwith one spike at right angles to 4o applying the toe-cap, the flanges ctbeing bent downward, as shown, allowing the boot-toe to enter the recesses of the cap. When in position, the spikes a4 are driven into the sole with a hammer, thus securing them without the aid of nails or screws, and they will rmly hold the cap until the ilanges themselves are worn away. p
I am aware of the English Patent No. 20,089, of the year 1891, taken out by Thomas Reading, and of other inventions for this purpose, but in which nails or screws or separate spikes had been used driven through the plates into the soles of the boots, and in all such devices the head of such nail, screw, or spike being the viirst to wear away .causes the cap to become loose long before it is worn out.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv
A boot or shoe toe protecting metallicv cap made with a series of radially-extending arms having turned-up pointed ends for hammering into under part of sole of said boot or shoe substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT STOCKS SIMISTER.
