To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EPHRAIM WIMER, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at- Orabbottom, in the county of Highland and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nails; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in nails, which are especially adapted for use in the manufacture or repair of boots and shoes. The nails heretofore used, in this connection, have proven unsatisfactory for the reason that the nail head soon wears away, leaving the sole loose.

The object of this invention is to obviate this difficulty and produce a nail, which will securely hold the parts together until the shoe has worn out in other parts, being especially intended for use in putting in shanks and for half soling.

To the accomplishment of this end, my invention consists in the certain construction and combination of parts, hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a view illustrating the application of my nail, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing a nail having a single shank.

Referring to letters on the drawings, A indicates the nail which consists of a shank a and head a the nail being preferably rectangular in shape and so arranged with respect to the shank that a shoulder of will be formed in the sides of said shank, its front and rear faces being flush therewith. The head a, is preferably flat on all sides and the distance from the upper end of the shank to the top of head is such that in use the head will be embedded in the leather preferably about twothirds the thickness thereof, the top of the head being flush with the outer surface of the leather and surmounted by an auxiliary cone shaped head b, as shown in Fig. 1. By this arrangement it will be seen that the shoulders formed by the conjunction of the head and shank, give the nail a hold or perch on one-third the thickness of the leather, which necessitates the wearing away of two-thirds the thickness before the head can be worn away so as to pull through the leather, which proportion of wear of the shank of the shoe never occurs before the center of the soles have entirely worn away. It will be seen, that by the use of this construction a safe and reliable nail is provided which fully answers the purpose for which it is intended, while at the same time should the outer head become worn, the nail still performs its holding functions because of its peculiar construction.

As an improved article of manufacture, a nail consisting ofa shank, a head on said shank, said head extending beyond the sides of the shank and having its front and rear faces flush therewith, and an auxiliary concshaped head formed upon the main head, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
