CHARLES MINER, OF WILKES-BARBIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
SHOE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES MINER, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVilkes-Barre, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invent-ion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to shoes for use in places where portions of the soles are worn away rapidly; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, whereby the worn portion of the sole may be quickly removed and renewed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of a shoe constructed according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a portion of the sole. Fig. 3 is a cross-sec tion through the sole, taken on the line wa: in Fig. 2.
The shoe is provided with a main sole 2 which extends under the instep and heel of the shoe, and which is secured to the upper 3 in any approved way. A reinforcing piece 1 is secured to the sole at the instep and its front end forms a stop 5.
A removable sole plate 6 is provided having a tongue 7 around its toe and front end portion, and having a shoulder S at its rear. A flap 9 projects over the shoulder, and the sole plate is preferably formed of two thick nesses of leather secured together by rivets 10. A guide piece 11 provided with a groove 12 is secured to the front end and toe portion of the main sole 2. This guide piece is formed of leather, but a metallic guide piece may be used, and it and the removable sole plate may be tongued and grooved in various ways in carrying out this invention.
specification of Letters Patent. Patented J 11110 24, 1913.
Application filed March 13, 1912.
Serial No. 683,644.
The removable sole plate is slid into engagement with the guide piece, and the shoulder 8 is sprung into engagement with the stop 5 on the front end of the reinforcing piece 4.
When the removable sole plate becomes worn or otherwise injured, it is pulled out of the guide piece by means of the flap 9 which can be sprung out of line with the sole plate, and a new sole plate is substituted for it.
WVhat I claim is:
1. The combination, with the main portion of a shoe sole provided with a projecting stop under its instep, of a guide piece secured around the toe and front part of the sole, and a removable sole plate provided with a tongue around its toe and front portion which is slidable in the guide piece, said sole plate having a shoulder at its rear part which is sprung into engagement with the said stop, and having also a flap which overlaps the stop.
2. A shoe provided with a guide piece at the front end portion of its sole and having a stop under its instep, said shoe having also a removable sole plate which is slidable into and out of engagement with the said guide piece and which has a shoulder at its rear part which is sprung into engagement with the said stop, the said sole plate being held in position by frictional contact between the said shoulder and stop and its own elasticity.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES MINER.
