Description

Patented Aug. 4,1874.
/m' 0.11m@ ab per at the toe. p invention consists in a flange around the toe UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN E. EUssEY, OE BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENTIN SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,829, dated August 4, 1874; application led July 6, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OEN H. HUssEY, of Baltimore, in thev county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, andato the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates more particularly to childrens shoes, but is equally applicable to boots and shoes of any size; and has for its object to prevent the wearing out of the up- To this end the nature of my Of the shoe, formed by cutting a piece in the upper surface of the outer or middle sole, and bending the piece so cut upward, and leaving a channel in the sole, the inner sole being beveled at the toe and litting inside of said ange, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure lis a side View of a shoe embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the entire sole of the.
shoe. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 4 is a plan view oi' the toe of the Outer sole. p
A represents the Outer sole, and B the inner sole, of a shoe.- Between these I have shown a middle sole, C, and in the upper surface of this sole a part of the leather is cut or slit around the toe, and bent upward to form a liange, D, as shown. Where no middle sole is used this flange is formed in the-upper surface of the outer sole A in precisely the same manner. The formation of this iiange from the sole, as shown, leaves a channel, a, in which the insole lits at the toe, so that the insole at the toe is not above the outer portion of the channeled sole, so the end of the insole will not wear or cut the endof the upper. The inner sole is beveled on its upper surface at the toe, and is fastened at or near the heel. It is made so as to be the least triie longer from the point of fastening than from said point to the flange D. "The inner sole B will therefore have to be bent slightly to lit within said flange, and this, in connection with its beveled toe, makes it fit down closely to the outer at the bottom of the flange.
When the shoe is completed the ange D forms a protection for the upper at the toe, in addition to the protection afforded by the insole tting in the channel a; and all this is formed from the sole C without the addition of any other material whatever.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters `Patent, is-
The liange D, cut from the inside of the sole C, leaving the channel a in the upper surface ofthe sole C, in combination with the beveled insole B, filling said channel, and the upper, all as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN H. HUSSEY.
