ALVA VINCENT CAMPBELL, OF OROYDON, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE HALF TO JOSEPH LAMBERT, OF SAME PLACE.
BOOT OR SHOE PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 585,554, dated June 29, 1897.
Application filed April 1, 1896. Serial'No. 685,763. (No model.) Patented in England January 29, 1896, No. 2,104, and in France March 5,1896,N0. 241,799.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALVA VINCENT CAMP- BELL, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 44 Tamworth Road, Oroydon, in the county of Surrey, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boot or Shoe Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
The invention has been patented in Eng land, No. 2,104., dated January 29, 1896, and in France, No. 241,799, dated March 5, 1896.
This invention is designed to prevent the wearing down of the heels of boots and shoes and is applicable to new boots or for the repair of old ones.
Referring to the drawings which form part of this specification, Figure 1 shows a plan view of the top of a boot-heel fitted with my protector, and Fig. 2 shows a vertical section of same on the line so at.
a is the triangular fiat piece of leather or metal, which forms the protector and the sides of which are curved to the shape of the heel.
bis a screw by which the plate a is fastened to the heel. This screw should be well sunk in to prevent the head from wearing away.
and, second, to complete the half or threequarter curve of the heel on the wearing side. This plate a is fixed in the usual way. It is entirely optional.
The method of use is easily understood.
The protector is fixed level with the top piece and fastened down by the center screw. The pins prevent lateral movement until the screw is withdrawn, when the protector can be lifted and its sides transposed. The side piece is fastened down by screws or nails level with the top piece and three-sided protector.
This invention'will prevent that frequent cause of injury to boots and shoes (overrun heels) which often results in sprained ankles. It is applicable to all kinds of boots and shoes. When made of leather or other fibrous material, it is by preference furnished with a row of nails or plugs on its edges. It can be made of leather or any suitable metal or material and may be waterproofed or compressed, or, if metal, coated with copper or zinc to prevent oxidation.
l-Iaving now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination, in a heel-protector, a plate at having a plurality of wearing edges, a screw for holding the plate and allowing it to be adjusted to bring either of its edges in proper position and the wear-plate 6 extending along one edge of the heel and having its end fitted against the edge of the adjustable plate, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
ALVA VINCENT CAMPBELL. WVitnesses:
FRED C. HARRIS, Gno. J. B. FRANKLIN.
