To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN D. KENNEDY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New Kensington, in the county of estmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful 1mprovements in Toe-Protectors for Shoes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to a toe protector for shoes used by children when coasting on sleds and has for one of its objects to provide means in the manner as hereinafter set forth, which can be conveniently secured 'to the shoe so as to prevent the toe of the shoe from becoming worn when guiding the sled and furthermore to prevent the foot being injured in contacting with stones or other hard bodies buried in the snow when coasting.

Further objects of the invention are to provide a toe protector which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, quickly applied to the shoe, efficient in its use, forming a means to prevent the toe of the foot from becoming cold, and inexpensive to manufacture.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invent-ion, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.

In describing the invention in detail, reference is had to the accompanying drawing, wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the shoe showing the adaptation thereto of a toe protector in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is an inverted plan of the protector with the back strap broken away, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the toe rotector in accordance with this invention.

Referring to the drawing in detail 1 denotes a shoe upon which is secured, through the medium of a back strap 2 and a front strap 3, the toe protector.

The toe protector consists of a sole plate 4: of metal which is adapted to be positioned against the sole of the shoe and is cut away as at 5 to decrease the weight thereof. At the inner end of the sole plate 4- and at each side thereof the plate is formed with vertically-extending lugs 6 having horizontally-disposed slots 7 at their tops and vertically-disposed rear slots 8. The sole plate l has formed integral therewith at its forward end a cap piece 9 which is also of metal and which conforms to the toe of the shoe. The cap piece 9 centrally at its top is formed with a rearwardly-extend ing V-shaped projection 10. Extending within the cap piece 9 as well as projecting rearwardly therefrom is a leather tip 11 which conforms to the shape of the toe of the shoe and is formed with a bot-tom 12 which abuts against the sole of the shoe. The leather tip 11 forms a lining for the cap piece 9 and is secured thereto through the medium of rivets 13 and 1 1. Secured centrally to the inner face of the tip 11 at the top thereof and projecting rearwardly from said tip is a connecting strip of leather 15 which is fixedly secured to the front strap. 3, as at 16. The securing means between the connecting strap 15 and the tip 11 is indicated as at 17 and consists of a rivet which not only extends through the tip 11, but also through the extension 10 of the cap piece 9. The forward strap 3 extends through the horizontally-disposed slots 7 of the lugs 6 and includes a buckle 18, and the back strap 2 extends through the vertically-disposed slots 8 of the lugs 6 and includes a buckle 19. The front strap 3 extends over the instep and the back strap 2 is extended around the back of the shoe and when the ends of the straps 2 and 3 are connected by the buckles 18, 19, the toe protector is securely connected to the shoe. Then the toe pro tector is positioned upon the shoe the plate 4: is arranged against the sole and the tip 11 with the reinforcing cap piece therefor is mounted upon the toe of the shoe.

What I claim is A toe protector comprising a metallic sole plate, a metallic cap piece integral therewith and having a rearward projection, a flexible tip extending into and of greater length than the cap, means for securing the tip to the sole plate, a pair of Vertically disposed metallic lugs carried by the sole plate and each having a slot at its top and a slot at its rear, straps extending through the slots of each lug for connecting thesole plate, in position, a flexible connecting strip extending from one of said straps, means for se-- curing the forward end of the strip to said 10 tip and projection, and means for securing the tip to the body of the cap.
