HOB-NAIL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,181, dated November 12, 1889. Application filed July 13, 1889. Serial No.`3l7,646. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. WILCOX, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful ImprovementJ in Hob-Nails; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to an improvement in hob-nails; and it consists in making the nail in two parts-viz., head and tang.
To enable others skilled in the art with whichA my invention is most nearly connect-ed to make and use it, I will proceed to describe the manner of constructing it.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of my specification, Figure l is a sectional view of the head or hob portion with a straight Opening through it for receiving the nail. Fig. 2 is the same with a tapered open- Fig. 3 is the same with the opening partially straight and partially tapered. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the head or hob and the tang joined together. Fig. 5 is a crosssection of the same. Fig. G is a section of the hob portion with the outer face countersunk, so that when the tang is inserted the head of the tang will be flush with the outer face of the hob. Fig. 7 is a view of a tang or nail to be inserted in the opening in the hob. f
Reference being had to the drawings and the letters thereon, A indicates a supplemental head or hob of the naihwhich is provided with an aperture B, through which the nail passes, and said aperture may be of any desired form, several modified constructions being shown in the several figures on the drawings. The
head A may also be provided with a recess or countersink E for the reception of an enlarged or fiattened head (not shown) on the nail D. On the inner surface of the supplemental head are outwardly-inclined projections or wings C, which embed themselves in the leather when the nail and the supplemental head are driven into the sole or heel of a shoe, and assist in holding the nail and the supplemental head in position on a shoe by reason of the Outer inclined surface of the projection being forced into and under the grain of the leather.
D indicates the nail proper or body portion, which is provided with an enlargement or head at one end formed integral therewith, which head corresponds in shape with the shape or configuration of the aperture B in the supplemental head A, and whenv driven through said aperture and into a boot or shoe sole the Outer surface or end of the head on the nail D is flush with the outer or wearing surface of the supplemental head A. The body portion of the nai-l presents a plain smooth surface, and is slightly tapered at its driving or entering end.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- As an article of manufacture, a hob-nail having a supplemental head separate from the nail and provided with an aperture through said head to receive the head of the nail, and outwardly-inclined projections on the inner surface thereof to enter and embed themselves in a shoe-sole, and a fiat outer wearing-surface, and a nail having a head integral therewith corresponding in form with and to be driven through the aperture in said supplemental head, substantially as described.
