UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LAROY S. PFOUTS AND LORENZO D. BALL, OF CANTON, OHIO; SAID PFOUTS ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE HUlVIPHRIES.
BOOT OR SHOE SOLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,942, dated June 6, 1893.
Application dled July 22, 1892. Serial No. 440,899. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that we, LAROY S. PFOUTS and LORENZO D. BALL, citizens of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State Of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boot or Shoe Soles; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to lo the annexed drawings, making a part Of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Fignre l, is a view showing the different sections detached. Fig. 2, is a longitudinal I5 section through line .x4-, Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a transverse section through line y-y, Fig. 1. Fig. 4, is a detached view of one Of the heelplates.
The present invention has relation to boot or shoe soles and it consists in the peculiar construction hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Similar letters Of reference indicate corresponding parts in al1 the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the ends of the sections of the sole proper, and B represents the center sections. The sections A, are each provided with the in- 3o clined lugs or studs ct, which are substantially of the form shown in the drawings, and as shown the bottom or end faces of said studs are inclined from their heels to their points,
and the top or upper sides Of said studs are formed straight, and in line with the top or upper faces of the sections A. The center section B,is provided with the inclined notches or recesses b, which notches or recesses are located substantially as illustrated in Fig. l. The notches or recesses b, are provided with inclined faces,which inclined faces correspond with the inclination Of the studs @,said notches and studs being so arranged that when the edges of the sections A, and B, are brought together as illustrated in Fig. 2, the sections 'forming the shoe sole proper, will be brought in proper alignment, thereby providing a means for assisting in holding the sections in proper position upon the shoe sole. The stud ci, and the recess b, serve also for the purpose of assisting in holding the sections in proper lateral adjustment. It will be understood that by Our peculiar and novel arrangement, of uniting the edges of the sections together, the shoe-sole formed by the sections A, and B, will have a sufficient amount of iiexibility to compensate for any bending of the leather soie upon which the sections A, and B, are attached. For the purpose of forming a metal shoe-sole that will be 6o light and at the same time have the desired amount of wearing quality, We prefer to form the sections A, and B, of aluminium. The heel-plate O, may be Of the form illustrated in Fig. 4, and is attached to the heel of a boot Or shoe in the ordinary manner. For the purpose of providing a metal boot Or shoe sole that will not sli p, the bottom or under faces of the sections A, and B, are provided with the grooves c, which grooves may be arranged as 7o illustrated in the drawings, or they may eX- tend across the bottom or under faces of the sections in any other direction from the one shown in the drawings. By inclining the studs a, and the recesses b, the sections A, and B, will be held in proper alignment at all times;
as the inclined faces Of the st uds and recesses will abut one against the other. The sections A, and B, will not be thrown out of alignment as said sections are worn thin from use; but 8o the same relative position as tO alignment will be maintained throughout all the stages of wear and the various thicknesses Of the sections.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire tO secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the sections A provided with the studs Or projections having inclined faces upon one side thereof, the section B pro- 9o vided with inclined notches b formed in the edges Of said section B, all of the sections having straight meeting edges and provided with the grooves e, substantially as and for the purposespecitied. 95
In testimony that we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
