TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
Beit known that I, MICHAEL E. SAVOY, of Corinth, in the 'county of Saratoga, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Combined Shankand Counter for Boots and Shoes; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention consists in combining a metallic shank' and counter in such a. manner that they may be readily applied to or tted Vina boot or shoe, and the counter adjusted to iit or suit any-sized heel, and theparts readily removed froiin a worn-out boot or shoe, and applied to a new one.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings- Figure 1 is a side sectional view of'my invention, taken in the line n: x, fi Figure 2, a perspective view of the same. l Similar letters ot'- reference indicate corresponding parts.
` A represents a metallic shank, which Vmay be constructed of hardrolled brass,or ot' steel, and in curved fornn correspondingnr to the curvature of the hollow of the foot.
vB. is av metallic counter, which is also constrnucted of hard-rolled brass or stoel, to the lower rear part `of which therearend oflthe shank is attached, the shank and counter being cut out of the same piece of nietal plate, if desired. The counter is bent in theform et' the heel ot' the boot or shoe, and the front lower lends of the counter are `provided with arms, a a, 'which are riveted to the shank A,as shown at bib, said arms being provided with a plurality ofholes, so that the centre may be attached to thel shank in a. more or less contracted state, in a transverse direction, to suit the size of the heel-portion to which it is to be applied'.
The shank A'is fitted in the sole of-the boot or shoe, between the layers thereof, and in the hollow or rise of the sole infront of the heel, and the counter B is fitted between the innerand outer leather above the heel', as usual.l i l i The shank end counter thusjconnected or combined, may be constructed at avery'moderate cost, and be very readily vfitted in' the bootor shoe. l
Theexpanding or contracting of the counter to suit the size ofthe heel-part of the boot or shoe, is agreat advantage, as it vadmits of a boot orshoe being made to snit the foot of the wearer.. The ordinary metallic counters cannot be thus 'adjusted or bent, and secured in the proper bent or desired shape, as they have no connection with the shank.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-v Thel curved metallic shank A, andfcounter B, when the latter is provided with the adjustable arms a, for securing'said counter at its forward end to the shank A, constructed and arranged as herein shown and described, when stamped from one piece of metal. l
The Vabovespecification of'my invention signed bythe, this 11th day of October,1857.
' MICHAEL E; SAVOY.
