To all 'whom it may conce/ra:

Be it known that I, MAHLON WARNE, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Sabot; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, cleai', and exact description of the same.

My invention consists, firstly, of a metal plate, of a shape similar to that oi' the sole of a hoot or shoe, and secured to the latter by the devices described hereafter, and, secondly of a strip of cloth, or equivalent fabric, secured to the said plate, in such a manner as to be easily removed therefrom when worn out, and by the use of which the eiiiciency of the sabot, as a means of preventing falls in walking over slippery sidewalks, 85e., is greatly increased.

In order 'to enable others to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a sectional view of my improved sabot,

A is a metal plate, of a shape corresponding to that of the sole of' a boot or shoe, and terminating at its rear end in a projection, b.

A number of transverse slots, B, are cut in the plate A, and a strip, D, of cloth, coarse linen, or similar fabric, is passed through these slots, as shown best in iig. l, oneor both ends of the said strip being so sewed, or otherwise secured, as to prevent accidental withdrawal from the plate.

A T-shaped strip of leather, 7.', which forms a toepiece for the sabot, is secured to two of the buttons e, third, as will be hereafter described.

A longitudinal slot, j, enlarged at its front end, is cut in the -projection b of the plate A, and a screw, h,

arranged to enter this slot, is driven into the sole of the boot, in front of the heel.

When the sabot is to be seciued to the boot or shoe, the head of the screw 7L is passed tln'ough the enlarged end of the slot j' of the plate A, and the latter is then chawn forward, the headvof the screw being thus c'oniined within the narrow portion of the slot, in which position it aids in preventing any lateral movement of the plate, and the fasteniugis completed, and all longitudinal motion of the plate prevented, by the leather strip It, which is passed over the toe of the boot or shoe, and attached to the buttons e.

In ordinary sabots, the socket for the toe of the boot is of such a form that, while it will receive the round toe oi one boot, yit will not permit the introduction of the square toe of another. By my improvement, owing to the peculiar form 'of the strip It, the sabot may be secured as firmly to one form of boot as to another.

By the application of cloth, or equivalent fabric, to the under side of the plate A, the eiieiency of the sabot, when used in walking over slippery sidewalks, Stc., is greatly increased, and it will be evident that the strips of cloth, when attached to the sabot in the manner described, may be easily removed, and replaced by others whenever they have become worn, and unfit for further use.

The strip of cloth may, however, be dispensed with, if desired, and a piece of leather, cut to the required shape, may be riveted to the plate, as shown in the modification, figs. 5 and 6.
