To all whom wit-may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN-i T. HANNON,
- a citizen of the United States, residing at Natick, in the county of Middlesex and State ofMassachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in .Metal Protectors for Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a metal protector for the-fore part of the sole of a boot or shoe which is particularly adapted to be used in connection with miners and soldiers boots and shoes where the soles and toe caps or tips ofthe shoes are exposed to very rough usage."
The object of the invention is to provide a protector'which can be readily attached to the sole of a. boot or shoe of ordinary construction and which will prevent the sole of the boot from being cut and worn by contact with the rough stone and ore with which said boots come in contact. The object of the invention 1s further to provide a'metal protector which will pre-.
vent the wearer from slipping.
The invention consists in a metal proteetor such as'yhereinafter described in the specification and particularly as set forth in the claim;
' Referring to the a plan view of my improved metal protector.
Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation taken on line 22 of Fig.1. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation showing the'protector attached to the.
sole of a boot or shoe.
out the several views of the drawings.
In'the drawings, 5 isthe metal protector which is provided with a plurality of series of hollow conical projections 6 having closedends. Said projections are strucl: up from the metal forming the tread portionof the protector and constitute a means for preventing the wearer from slipping, said projections 6 being formed upon the tread portion of the protector and projecting ioutwardly therefrom. Said'protector is alsoprovided with a plurality of pointed 'tri- ."an'gular projections 7 which are struck up from the metal of which the'protector is formed between adjacent hollow'conical projections 6 of the outer-serles of 'saidprojections and-constitute a fastening means whereby said protector can be joined to the sole 8 of a bootor shoe; Thenrotector' is Specification of Letters Patent.
additional fastening means, such as nails,

also provided with a plurality of triangular projections 9 which, when the-protector is I first stamped out, appear as shown in-dotted lines at the rear edge of the protector in Fig. 1, said triangular projections being subsequently bent up into the position illustrated in full lines in the drawings. Said projections 9 when driven into the sole of the shoe the different projections hereinbefore de-.
scribed integral with the bodyportion of the protector. After the protector has been fastened to the shoe, the. shoe is'worn in the a usual manner while the protector saves the also prevents the" wearer from slipping.
The metal protector 5 .is preferably pro.- vided with a plurality of holes 10 so that may be driven through these holes into the sole and assist. in holding the protector to the sole.
i7 5 sole of the shoe from abrasion and wear and Having thus described my inventiomwhat I claim and desire by Letters Patent to se'-.- cure is:
, A protector of metalfor the 'fore part of a boot or shoe comprisinga tread portion constructed to cover substantially the whole of the fore. part of the sole of aboot or shoe Like numerals refer tohke parts throughand with a plurality of series of hollow ing outwardly therefrom anda plurality of pointed triangular projections struck up from said metal and projecting from the inner face thereof along the extreme rearedgeof said protector and other triangular projections struck up from said metal between adjacent hollow. projections-10f. one of said series, whereby said protleetorimay be.
fastened to the fore part off-theig-s ole of a 'boot or shoe.
In testimony whereof I -havehereunto set my 'hand in presence oftwosubscribing DANIEL A. Romans.
