JOHN B. OREEMER, OF NE? YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR 'lO HIMSELF AND S. D\VIGHT HUMPHREY, OF SAME PLACE.
MATCH-SAFE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 19,111, dated. January 12, 1858.
To all whom z'zf may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN B. CREEMER, of the city and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a new and useful Improvement in Safes for Matches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full. clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein- Figure 1, is a plan of said safe with the cover removed. Fig. 2, is a vertical central section and Fig. 3, is a front elevation.
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts.
bottom of a closed hopper, in connection with an inclined plate or slide, in such a manner that on turning the said cylinderthe matches will be delivered one at a time onto the said incline and slide down the same ready to be picked up and lighted, thus protecting the matches from dampness avoiding handling and preventing spilling.
In the drawing, a, is the base of the safe formed with a back 1, sides 2, 2, and incline, 3, with its rib 4, on the lower edge.
6, is a cylinder set in notches in the sides 2, 2, and said cylinder is formed with one or more longitudinal grooves of a size to receive one match, and also provided with a handle or knob outside the base a, by which said cylinder can be turned.
0, is the hopper containing matches. This is formed with the inclined sides 4, 4, setting down to the cylinder 5, and with the ends 5, 5 and back 6. over the journals of the cylinder 7), and the base a, and hopper o, are connected together by a tongue 7, riveted or otherwise secured into the base a.
r]. is the cover of the match safe having a pin 8, inserted into a. hole in the back 6, and also having lugs 9, 9, through which lugs and the sides 2, 2, a long pin 10, is inserted. By withdrawing this pin the cover (I, :an be removed for replenishing the hopper with matches.
Upon turning the cylinder 6, one match at a time will be delivered from the hopper, c, and sliding down the incline 3, will be ar rested by the rib 11, ready to be taken up and lighted. For this purpose a groove 12, may be left in the front plate of the cover, with the rough surface from casting said cover, while. the other parts are to be enameled or otherwise ornamented. I prefer that the whole safe be of cast iron.
I do not claim a grooved cylinder in itself, but
\Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The grooved cylinder 72, in combination with the hopper c, and inclined slide 3, to deliver one match at a time, substantially as specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature this sixteenth day of December, 1857.
JOHN B. CREEMER.
Vitnesses LEMUEL SERRELL, Tnorms G. HAROLD.
