NITED PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. BROWNELL, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN ARTISTS KITS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 213,166, dated March 11, 1879; application file December 6, 1878.
' a specification:
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawing, and then pointed out in the claims.
The lower section,A, is hinged to the second section, B, and is designed for the reception of board, tiles, or canvas. When these two sections are closed together they are fastened by hooks a. I
The section B is divided by partitions into small compartments for receiving colors and other materials, and is hinged to the third section, 0, at the end opposite the hinges of the sections A B. A rod, 1), is pivoted in a slot in the section 0, and engages notches in the edge of the section B. To insure steadiness, one of the rods 1) is pivoted in each side of the section 0.
The section O is divided by longitudinal partitions c, and contains a tray, D, which rests upon the longitudinal partition, and is shorter than the section 0.
In the front edge of the section 0 there is a groove, (1, for receiving the lower edge of the board or tile or whatever is being painted on.
A frame, E, is pivoted in the box 0, and has in it a groove, 6, for receiving the upper edge of the picture. This frame is drawn downward by elastic rubber bands f.
The cover F is hinged to the section 0, opposite the hinges that connect the sections B O, and is provided with a notched metallic strip, 9, by which it may be retained at different angles. The cover is provided with means for retaining the pallet, and it has a groove, h, along its edge for holding a tile or piece of board.
A hole is bored in the side of the cover to receive a pin, G, which supports the rest-stick. This pin has several beads, 2', which are designed to prevent the slipping of the stick.
Before the box is closed the pin G is withdrawn and placed in the box, the frame E is folded down into the section 0, then theseveral parts are closed together, and fastened by means of the hooks. The box maybe readily carried by the handle H, and when it is to be used it is easily opened andadjusted, so that whatever is in the box maybe reached without disturbing the adjustment.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. An artists box consisting, essentially, of the four sections A B O F, the tray D, and the frame E, having elastic straps f, the sections B O being partitioned and adapted to be held apart by pivot-rods b, while the cover is provided with a notched strap, 9, as shown and described.
2. The combination of the removable pin Gr with the box having an adjustable cover, F, substantially as herein shown and described.
WILLIAM H. BROWNELL.
