Description

w. H1. MORSE.
I Shoe-Blanking Cases.
' No. 159,602? PatentedFeb.9,1875.
- WITNESSES:
4 n mvmom WILLIAM H. MORSE, OF EAST NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHOE-BLACKING CASES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,602, dated February 9, 1875; app'ication filed November 14, 1874.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. Moms, of East New York, Kings county, New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shoe-Blacking Cases, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section of my improved shoe-blacking case, the cover being shown as turned back, and the case arranged for use.- Fig. 2 is an end view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a detail top View of the blacking-box holder.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
A represents the box of the case, which is made of suitable size and shape, and is provided with legs B,of such a length as to raise the box to a convenient height. The legs B may be made in one piece with the ends of the box A, and may be made with a shoulder, b, to support the bottom a, which is laid in loosely, so that it may be readily removed for convenience in cleaning out the box. If desired, the bottom a may rest upon cleats attached to the lower edges of the sides or ends of the box A. G is a bar, the ends of which rest in notches in the inner sides of the upper edges of the ends of the box A. The rear.
end of the bar 0 is kept from rising by a plate or tenon, O,attached to or formed upon it, and which enters a groove in the notch in the endof the box A, as shown in Fig. 1. D is a block, in the inner end of which is formed a mortise to receive the forward end of the bar 0, and which is grooved transversely upon its lower side, to receive and fit upon the upper edge of the forward end of. the box A. In
the upper side of the forward part of the block.
D is formed a round hole to receive the box of blacking, which is secured in place by a curved plate or spring, E, placed in it upon one side, and which is held forward against the edge of the blacking-box by a hand-screw, F, which passes in through one side of the block D, and its forward end rests against or is swiveled to the said plate or spring E. The device E F enables different-sized blackingboxes to be held securely in the holder D. The holder D is provided with a hinged or sliding cover, d, to enable the blacking to be conveniently protected from dust and dirt while cleaning the boots or shoes preparatory to blacking them. To the upper side of the bar 0 is attached a block, G, to serve as a rest to support the foot while blacking the boot 0r shoe, and which is made with a rabbet to receive the heel, and is provided with projecting points to prevent the foot from slipping. The box A is provided with a cover, H, which is hinged at one edge to the upper. edge of a side of the said box A, so that it can be turned back to uncover the case A, and to serve as a table for holding the brushes when it may be desired to lay them down. The cover H is supported, when turned down, by a wide cleat, I, attached to the side of box A. To the other side of the box A is attached a cleat, J, so that the two cleats I J may serve as handles for lifting and carrying the case.
When the case is to be closed, the holder D is detached and placed in the box A, and the bar 0 is inverted and replaced in its notches; the cover H can then be closed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pate11t 1. The foot-rest bar 0, provided with tenon G, and ends fitting into recesses of box A, as and for the purpose described.
2. The holder D, having transverse recess near one end to receive the edge of box A, and a longitudinal aperture leading into said recess to receive one end of bar 0, as and for the purpose specified.
3. The caseA, provided with cleat I, to serve as handle to box and support to cover, as and for the purpose specified.
WILLIAMJEIENRY MORSE.
