DUST PAN.
No. 371,973. Patented Oct. 25, 1887.

UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LETTA R. REIOHERT, OF DELAWARE, OHIO.
DUST-PAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 371,973, dated October 25, .1887.
Application filed March 24, 1887.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LETTA R. REIOHERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Delaware, in the county of Delaware and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dust-Pans, of which the following is aspecification.
My invention relates to improvements in dust-pans; and the object I have in view is to provide a dust-pan with a socket of simple construction, by the use of which the pan may be held in proper operative position by the foot of the user, and which, when not in use, will be entirely shielded by the pan, and which will not detract from the general neat appearance of the same.
To this end my invention consists in a socket of proper size. secured to the under side of the pan, at or near the rear edge thereof, and in the construction of said socket, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a dust-pan provided with my improvements, and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designatcs a dust-pan of ordinary construction. To the under side of the dust-pan I secure, by any suitable means, the shoe or socket B, formed by bending up the edges of a strip of any suitable material to form the sides 0 G, the main portion of the strip forming the bottom D. This bottom D is roughened 011 its upper side in any suitable manner, but preferably by striking up the bottom to form the projections d, as shown in the drawings.
Serial No. 231341. (No model.)
It will be observed upon reference to Fig; 2 that the rear edge of theshoe or socket is in the same plane as the front edge of the dustpan. This arrangement gives the dust-pan the proper inclination when set on the door to permit all the sweepings to be easily swept up thereon.
In operation the toe of the user is inserted in the shoe or socket B, thereby holding the pan in proper position. The upper roughened surface of the socket prevents the pan accidentally slipping from the foot of the user, and, as it is cheap, light, and simple, it is thought its advantages will be readily appreciated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
A dust-pan provided on its under side with an angular shoe or socket, B, formed with a flat bottom, D, and the sides 0, extending up ward from the bottom and having their upper edges secured to the bottom of the dust-pan, the said shoe having its bottom D on a horizontal plane with the front edge of the pan and having its rear open end terminating in a vertical plane with the rear wall of the pan, the shoe being decreased in height from the rear to the front, as set forth.
