`Application lel August 20, 191?. Serial No. 182312;
To all whom t may concern Be it known that L Hauer J. VAN Frit'r, a citizen of the United. States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sounding Toys; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apporta-ins to make and use the same.
This invention is an improvement in toys and has particular reference to a sounding An object of the invention is to provide a toy of simple and inexpensive construction which is adapted to be whirled around in the air at various speeds in order to produce sounds of different tone and pitch.
rlhe inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions, one of which, for the purpose of illustrating the invention, is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein :uw
Figure l is a side elevation of a toy constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a similar view looking at the other side of the toy.
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the body portion of the toy showing the same in partially opened position.
Fig. l is a section on the line Fig. l.
Fig. 5 is an end elevation.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in what .is now believed to be its preferred form which comprises the body portion 5 formed of an elongated strip of material bent upon itself to a substantially Y-shaped formation to provide the parallel clamping' arms 6 and the diverging arms T. A guiding vane S formed of card board or any other suitable material adapted to contain advertising mattei' has one end thereof preferably bent upon itself as indicated at 9, and disposed between the clamping arm 6 so that said vane will be retained in proper position and extend rearwardly from the body portion 5. lin order to retain the vane in its clamped position, one end of the strip of metal forming the body portion 5 is provided adjacent one of its longitudinal edges with a lug 10 while the other end of said strip is provided intermediate its Li--li of longitudinal edges with the lug ll, said lugs being adapted to be bent over the opposite ends of the strip in order to retain the arms in clamping position. rl`he ends of the strip are further provided with apertures l2 which are adapted to register to receive an end of a cord or other flexible element 13. A. rubber band 1i or other flexible sound producing element is stretched around the body portion 5, engaging one of the ends of the different arms 6 and 7 so that when the body portion is whirled, in a manner to presently appear, sounds of varying tone and pitch will be produced by the rubber owing to the vibrations thereof, said sound and pitch depending upon the velocity with which the body portion is whirled. The vane `8 carried by the body portion is adapted to guide the same and prevent turning thereof about its own longitudinal axis or at an angle to the plane of travel thereof, said vane being at all times coincident with its are of movement and the rubber band 11i will therefore have its forward edge presented to the atmosphere as the toy is operated.
The cord 13 is madeof any length desired and is attached at its other end to a revolving hook 15 mounted upon one end and extending laterally from the handles 16 which is adapted to be grasped by the body portion in order to operate the toy.
What is claimed is l. A toy of the class described compris ing a body portion formed from an elongated strip bent upon itself at points inter mediate its ends to provide diverging arms, the ends of said strips extending from the inner ends of said diverging arms to form clamping arms, a lug extending from one of said clamping arms intermediate its longitudinal edges and adapted to be bent over the end of the other clamping arm, a second lug extending from said other clamping arm adjacent one of its longitudinal edges and adapted to be bent over the end of the first named clamping arm whereby to secure said clamping arms in their operative positions, a vane secured between said clamping arms for guiding the body portion while the saine is being whirled, and means connected to said body portion for whirling the saine.
2. A toy of the class described comprish ngva body, portierik formed `from an elongated strip bent 'upon itself 'at 'points intermediate its ends to provide diverging arms7 the ends of said strips extending from the inner ends of said ydiverging'arms'to `form clamping arms, means connected to the clamping arms for whirling the body portion, and means interposed between std Copies of this patent maybe-obtained for ve V'cents 4each, by addressing the clamping arms. for guiding said body p0rtion while the same is bein whirled.
In testimony whereof, I :i X my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
