Description
.N M d1.
o o e 0. ATKINSON.
i AUDIPHONB. No. 261,822. Patented Aug. l, 1882.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
CHARLES ATKINSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES Gr. TRUSDELL, OF SAME PLACE.
AUDIPHONE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 261,822, dated August 1, 1882.
Application filed June 1, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLEs ATKINSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State ot' Illinois, have invented certain new and useful ImprovementsinAndiphones and Microphones,of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to andiphones and microphones; and it consists ot' an instrument constructed to increase sounds and their articulation in the ear, and adapted to be readily attached to and worn on the ear, as hereinafter fully described, and as shown in the drawings.
Figure 1 is a perspective ot' the entire instrument. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section ofthe same.
`'A represents the body of a hollow instrument, having the opening Bin form similar to the ear ot' a horse, and is provided with the ear-tube C, adapted to he inserted in the eX- ternal cavity ofthe ear.
D and E are partitions arranged at the positions in the instrument as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. l and the sectional lines in Fig. 2 ofthe drawings, forming the chamber F. The partitions are provided with central apertures, b c, respectively, the aperture c being smaller than b. The perforated partitions and chamber are for the purpose ot'concentrating the sounds in the ear-tube.
The instruments maybe constructed ofglass, rubber, celluloid, or any other suitable materials, and they are formed so that one may be attached to each ear.
In use the end ofthe ear-tube is adjusted in the ear, and the instrument is held in place by means of a cord or a spring ot' suitable construction, of steel, silver, gold, or any other desirable materials, placed over the head and attached to the instrument. The sounds, striking the instrument within the opening B, are conveyed to the partition D, and through its aperture-b into the chamber F, thence to the partition E, and through its aperture c into the ear-tube C, as indicated by the arrows in the drawings.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The instrument for increasing sounds and their articulation in the ear, consisting of the hollow body A,having the opening B,ear-tube C, and perforated partitions D E, forming the y chamber F, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof [aflx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES ATKINSON.
