' F. B. HAMMANN TOY Filed March 25. 1922 IN VENTOR.
U A 7 TORNEY.
Patented June 3, 1924.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TOY.
Application filed March 25, 1929. Serial No. 546,790.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK B. HAM- MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore city, in the State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Toy, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a toy saxophone and has for its object the providing of a reed musical instrument capable of being played without keys with a curved exterior to resemble a saxophone.
A further object of my invention is the providing a musical instrument with an ex tending amplifier on the fixed range of the instrument.
A further object of my invention is an improved construct-ion of finger holes to give a flat surface to the finger.
A further object of my invention is the adopting an external reed mouth piece to what is known as a fiageolet.
A further object of my invention is an improved means for holding the reed on the mouth piece of wind reed instruments.
IVith the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, but it is understood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to which come within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawing of the herein described embodiment of my invention, I have shown in Figure l a perspective View of my toy embodying my improvements. Fig.2 is an enlarged sectionel view taken through 22 of Fig. I. Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan view of the mouth piece. Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view taken through 4 4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is an end view of the. mouth piece.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
1 is an improved saxophone mouth piece.
2 is the reed, 3 is my improved reed securing means, which consists of a flexible band, preferably resilient. I have found an or dinary rubber band suitable for the pur pose. 4: are hooks or any suitable means for holding the ends of the band 3.
5 is the body of my toy, on the upper end of which is secured the mouth piece 1 by my improved means which consists of a resilient sleeve 6 between body 5 and mouth piece 1 formed by coating the upper end of body 5 with an adhesive, such as shellac, then applying powdered cork, thus forming a moulded conglomerate sleeve formed in place, over which the mouth piece neatly fits.
7 is an extension amplifier. In my toy, I curve it to resemble a saxophone. Bot y 5 and extension 7, for appearances are made as one, but in fact body 5 determining the musical range of the toy terminates at opening or openings 8. For appearances I put one on each side of my toy. 9 are the finger openings and form with openings 8 a scale of eight notes and may be easily played by anyone familiar with the flageolet.
The extension amplifier 7 simply acts as an amplifier. Openings 9 have a flat or plain element 10 on their exterior for better fitting the finger, and may be formed by stamping the metal as shown in Fig. i. 11 is an improved combined thumb rest and holder, being provided with a hole 12, in which a cord may be placed for hanging around a childs neck.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A toy saxophone comprising, a mouth piece, a body, and acurved saxophone shape amplifier connected thereto, said body having an opening adjacent said amplifier to determine the effective length of said body.
FREDERICK B. HAMMANN.
