Patented Mar. 10, 1925.
PATENT OFFICE.
HOI-IANNIS A. ANANIAN, OF NEW YORK. N. Y.
PINWHEEL TOY.
Application filed September 25. 1923.
T0 (1N whom it may concern:
lSe it known that l, HonANNIs A. AN- ANIAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pinwheel Toys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear. and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention provides a toy in simulation of a tlying machine, both in outline and operation. since it presents the appearance of an air plane and approximates the hum of the motor when the propeller is in motion, the device being mounted upon a blow pipe in which a reed or like element is located, the air blown through the pipe having a portion diverted to operate the propeller and a portion to act upon the reed to produce the hum or other required sound.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the inventimi is understood.
While the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention it is to he understood .hat in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the application:
Figure l is a top plan view of the toy,
Figure 2 is a side view thereof,
Figure 3 is a sectional detail on the line 3*S of Figure 2, looking in the direction of the arrows,
Figure at is a detail longitudinal section on the line at4 of Figure 3,
Figure 5 is a sectional detail on the line of Figure 4,
Figure (3 is a view similar to Figure 3 of a modification embodying two planes,
l igure 7 is a side view of a modified form of reed, and
Figure 8 is an lforresponding end view thereof.
and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The numeral 1 designates a blow pipe Serial No. 664,745.
which may be of any length and formation. A sound producing member is provided at one end of the pipe 1 and may he of. any preferred construction according to the character of the sound to be produced. The sound producing member comprises a reed or tongue and a holder 3 and occupies a portion of the pipe so as to leave an unobstructed air passage 4' for the escape of a portion of the air blown through the pipe whereby to operate the propeller of the body of the toy. In the modification shown in Figures 7 and 8, the holder 3 includes a ring 6 at one end of a diameter to snugly fit within the end oi the pipe 1. The holder may be secured within the pipe by solder. friction or in any preferred way.
A br fket is mounted upon the outer end of the pipe 1 in which is located the ound producing member and comprises a clamp T, a stem 8 and oppositely disposed arms 9 which have portions reheat, as indicated at 10, to engage and hold the body 11 of the toy in place. The brz cl v consists of a strip of metal doubled upon itself and shaped at the fold to provide the clamp 7. and having end portions broughttogether to form the stem 8 and thence bent outwardly to form the arms 0. it slide 12 mounted upon the element comprising the stem 8, serves to hold the bracket upon the pipe 1 and in position to grip the body of the toy. The plane member ll is cut from sheet material. such as still paper. cardboard, metal or the like. and has the, out line of a monoplane and supported upon the arms 9 and held thereto by the rebent ends 10. A pin 13 projects from the outer end of the toy and constitutes an axis upon which the propeller 5 is mounted and which is disposed so that the air escaping from the passage i of the pipe 1 operates to impart movement to the propeller.
In the modification shown in Figure (i, the bracket comprises extensions 14 and a second set of rebent portions which engage a second plane 16 thereby giving the toy the appearance oi a biplane. The e.-;- tensions 14 project from the inner ends of the reheat portions 10 and their outer ends are bent outwardly, thence inwardly, as indicated at 15, so as to embrace opposite ends of the plane 16.
The toy is operated hr intnrduciug an enti of the blow pipe 1 in the mouth and hide. ing there-through. A portion of the operates the sound producing member and a portion is diverted through the passage 4 and strikes the propeller 5 and causes the same to rotate. The noise produced may be similar to the hum of a flying machine or of any character according to the nature of the toy.
What is claimed is:
1. In a toy of the character specified, a blow pipe, a bracket mounted upon the blow pipe and comprising a clamp, a stem and oppositely disposed arms, a slide on the stem, and a body supported upon the arms of the bracket and comprising a movable portion adapted to be set in motion by the air blown through the said pipe.
2. A toy of the character specified comprising a blow pipe, a sound producing member within an end oi the blow pipe, a bracket consisting of a strip doubled upon itself to provide a clamp which embraces the blow pipe, a stem, and oppositely (lis posed arms having rebent portions, a slide on the stern, a body held to said arms by the rebent portions thereof, and a propeller carried by the body and disposed to be operated by the air blown througl'i the said pipe.
in tcstiniony whereof l ai'iix my signature in presence of a witness.
